THE WAY TO
Murder of Hr. Joiner, of Dooly.
The Hawkinsville Dispatch of the
24th., instant gives the following par
ticulars of the recent tragedy in Doo
ly County in which "Mr. John. Joiner
was murdered by his step-son, young
Devereux:-
“It seems that young Devereux was
quite a self-willed character, as well as
a great spendthrift, as is the case with
most young men men who have been
raised in opulence and idleness. A
short time ago he visited Macon, and
to obtain funds to gratify his whims,
he forged a draft on his mother and
step-father for a thousand dollars,
which he obtained from one of the
city banks and squandered before re
turning home. Soon after reaching
home his parents received from the
bankers inf ormation of the transaction.
His mother made a hasty visit to Ma
con and had an interview with the par
ties who furnished the money. She
■promised to make good every dollar of
the amount as soon as crops were gath
ered. This was satisfactory, and Mrs.
Joiner returned home and informed
her husband of what she had promised.
He replied that he would not pay the
amount, and that no part of the crop
should go towards the payment of the
debt.
These wordstaxasperated Devereux,
and he and Joiner had a slight diffi
culty at the time. Devereux then
went to a store about one and a half
miles distant, and told the proprietor
he wanted to buy the best repeater he
had for sale—that he Jwahted to Mil
Joiner. He purchased the pistol and

Lord Brougham was fond of telling
the following story:
A bishop, at one of his country visi
tations, complained that the church
was badly kept and in bad repair,
pointing out that the rain evidently
came through the roof, and' adding,:
with some warmth, an expression
which he was horrified in finding in
the local paper next day reported thus;
“I shall not visit this d d church
again till it is in be tter order. •” The bish
op’s secretary thereupon wrote, mildly
suggesting that what his lordship said
was that he would not visit “this
damp old church again ” But the
editor, in- a foot note,- said that while
giving publicity to tiie explanation, he
had every confidence in the accuracy
of his reporter.
