tribunals of the. State, the decision of
which shall lie conclusive and shall be
respected and obeyed by the people of

Mr. Welborn, Chairman of the Com
mittee on the State of the Republic,
to whom was referred a resolution
looking to payment for emancipated
slaves, reported the following:
Whereas, The war lately waged by
the United States Government against
the Confederate States was, from the
beginning of the year 1863 until the.
close of said war*: , carried on for the
express purpose of emancipating the
slaves, and einancipation having been
received and considered by aU parties
as a result- of the war,
, Therefore, resolved, That the Sen
ate looks with disfavor npon the move
eminating from the republican side of
the chamber, having for its ostensible
object the rbtaining pay for emanci
pated slaves; that public opinion no
man who departed this' life ; of single
blessedness on Thursday Doc. 71b 1871.

the acting Governor to read such j>ar-

Eichmond Enquirer, aud Memplys
Avalanche:
‘ That was a very sensible veto by
the Acting-Governor of Georgia,
Nothing sentimental about that Gov
ernor. He had no notion of having
himself voted out of office to oblige
anybody, and so vetoed himself in for
the full term. We admire his disin
terested devotion. ”—-Enquirer.
The. Avalanche rises and explains
thus :
;Gonley, Governor Bullock's suc
cessor in Georgia, has an eye to b:i3;
iness. The Legislature recently passed
a bill providing for a new election for
Governor. In this election Conley
would not stand the ghost of a chance
for the.succession; so he has quietly
vetoed the bill, which cannot be passed
over his head. There’s 110 “bigted
nonsense about Conley.” Conley
thinks he has a “black cat” and
means to “skin it to the tail;” bnt he
need not be surprised if it turns ont
that the tiling he has got. hold of is an
eel, that will not hold still while he
skins.
