of the House of itepresehtatiyes, were
: propose A for tile nomination. The;
t first two ware withdrawn and Air. >
: Smith was nominated by acclamation. :
Wb ore equally; well pleased with, the i.
. unanimity of the Convention, and with >
• the fitness of the nominee for the high \
; .dice which he is destined to fill.
We have no doubt that the election j.
: of .the nominee is sure, and so think- j
j ingwe style him “onrnext Governor.” j
£n nominating Air. Smith the Con- :
j veution made most emphatically n-j
i wise and appropriate selection. He is
t s df-made ma.ii and is therefore self- ;
1 reliant and independent. Being self-;
j taught we suppose lie lias not those i
j-graces of finish which only a high!
■ grade of education can give ; but this j
ts counterbalanced, by a mind strong I
md vigorous in its operations, just and
fearless in its .conclusions. He was
our choice, and wo do not think a bet
ter selection could have been made.
He. is honest upright and fearless ; no
'influence, that can be brought to bear
>:i him will make him swerve from his
1 ! sense of right. Rings cannot touch
| him; no one will dare to approach
1 him with a bribe ; dishonesty will be
banished from the gubeniationnl office,-
and our grand old State will rejoice in
the possession of a chief magistrate
selected by the people and worthy to
e rule them.
1 Mr. Smith's speech of acceptance,’
which we publish elsewhere, expresses
3 some very sound and forcible views,
and v;e commend it to onr readers.
Congress the power to pass a national j
divorce law. We are opposed to it. ■,
Congress exercises so '.badly.the pow- j
ers already given it that we prefer to I
take some away rather than add to i
them. Upon the questions of mar
riage imd divorce, the opinions of the :
people vary extremely in different;
sections of the Union. The- laws-that
would suit New England would cot :
agree with the sentiments of the Wes- j
tern and Southern people. We don’t :
want any Procrustean-bed arrange- j
menfcs in this matter. The people are j
-better satisfied with the laws as they j
are, and we have.no doubt that their ]
offsets are- better- than' the national j
change-wonld be upon morality and j
the domestic hearth.

A committee was appointed to notify;
acting Governor Coilley, who respond-;
ed that he should not recognize the!
Legislature after twelve o’clock last-
Saturday night, when the forty days

It- is a nice question what the Leg-;

is of the opinion that if Conley refill

the office. The acting Fxecutive cau-

We repeat, again,
that’ there are, at least, three millions
two hundred thousand j Democratic
votes now in the Unit-id States, -ready
and willingto move in solid phalanx
ugitinst the' usurpers who now bear
sway, if they are in no' way “handi
capped” by man or principles which
they do not, and will not indorse.
The Radical popular vote cast in
1868 was (2,985,030,) two millions nine
hundred and eighty-five thousand and
thirty.
There were, then, not less than
three hundred thousand ' Democrats
disfranchised, who ,-ire now entitled
to Tote, The Radicals have certainly
made no converts to'their side since.
The changes have been tho other
.
way.
Some Northern papers assert tiiat
u it less than four hnndred tlionsand
Conservative Republicans! sri-oailefl,
who voted for General Grant in 1838!
are now hostile to his re-election. Ir
this be so, then the success of the
Democratic party is beyond aU don Iff
—and the country thereby saved from
imperalism—if prudence, discretion,
wisdom ;md‘'patriotism' g.ivoru their
councils.
All the great- vital questions are.
narrowing"down day by day, to the
single issue .of whether our govern
ment is a federal union of States or a
consolidated empire." 1
