j When I first came put to Brazil, I
; got a situation as clerk iu the eount-
: ing-liouse of Daiz, Brown & Co., the
; extensive merchants at Rio Janeiro.—
The only-other’white clerk in their
place of business was one Lopez de
i Pereira, a Portuguese by descent and
j birth, bnt educated in England. Of
| course we' became companions; and
j although he was eccentric to absurdity,
11 found him a very agreeable fellow
! oh the whole ; his whims being often
j irresistibly ridiciilous, while he was not
at all anhoyed at any laughter, but

'"'One day, when we nad been about-a
year together, the day being a holi
day, weresolved upon an expedition
to the top of the Corcovado. Accord
ingly,-hiririg horses, ■ we: rode up till
tlie horses could go no further. As
we rode, I-begstn to laugh and ques
tion him'with regard to his singular
weakness: My thoughts were direct
ed to this subject by seeing him turn
roHi.il on the horse’s back, and ride
with' his face to the-tail; and this
though the animal ■was very spirited,
and tbe path was so narrow that one
horse’only had room to go upon it,
with the stone wall of the aqueduct on
one-side; and a succession of wooden’
pi’ebipices : bn : the other. On my in
quiring the cause of this remarkable
manfietivre, he replied, laughing londly
•himself, that lie thought it was-a good
idea, as he coiild -talk to me better face
to face; for I was riding in the rear.—
But I remarked that we could con
verse qdite‘fis well without seeing each
oilier, and reminded him of the misers
who talked in the dark to save candles.
Upon this-he staled that, as all the
view lay behind us, and nothing in
front but woods, this was the most
rational way of riding for an admirer
of the picturesque. I bantered him
out of; his argument' also, when he
plainly'confessed that he rode in that
way" from an internal impulse, no
more to be resisted or controled by
him than the decrees of fate; that
there was a devil within liim who
prompted llini to make himself ridicu
lous, and that lie could no more gain
say this mastering spirit than fly iu
the air. For the rest of the ride he
continued to practice this uneavalier-

"entertainment of sundry blackies we
encountered working at small repairs
on the aqueduct, or bringing do\yn
loads of sticks from the woods.
At length wt! arrived at the last
collection of houses oh the ascent,
and here we left- onr horses, mounting
the last steps oh foot.
As soon as we stood upon the rocky
ball-, and looked around' us, over
whelmed 1 by the grandeur and danger
of the sebne, I was full of exclamations.
Prom tbe brim of the rock we stood
on, the sight leaped down direct to
fields"and lagoons two or three thous
and feet beneath us; and the precipices,
| The art of not hearing is fully as
| important to domestic happiness as a
; cultivated ear,•for which so much
j time and money is expended. There
| are so many things which is painful to
| hear, many of which, if heard, will
| disturb tlie temper and detract from
j contentment and happiness, that every
| one should be educated to take iu or
i shut out sounds at will. If a man
] falls into a violent passion nnd calls
j me ail manner of names, tbe first word
j shuts my ears, and I hear no more. If
in my quiet voyage of life I am caught
| iu one of those domestic, whirlwinds
of scolding, I shut my ears, as a sailor
j would furl his sail, -and, making aii
tight, send before the gale. If a hot
and restless man begins to inflame my
feelings, I consider what mischief
these sparks might do in the maga
zine below, where.my temper is kept,
and instantly close the door. Does a
gadding,: mischief-making fellow be
gin to inform- me what people are
saying- about me, down drops the
portcullis of my ear, :and he cannot
get in any farther. Sortie people feci
very, anxious to hear everything that
will vex or annoy them ; they set about
searching and finding it out. If all
the petty things said of. one by the
heedless or iilnatnred idlers were to
be brought home to. him, t he would
become a mere . walking pincushion,
stuck full of sharp remarks. I should
as soon thank a man for emptying on
my head a bushel of nettles, or setting
loose a swarm -of musquitoes iu my
chamber, or raisiug a pungent dust in
my house generally, as to bring upon
me all the tattle of spiteful people.— 1
If you would be happy when among
good men open your, ears; when
among bad, shut them. It is not
worth while'to hear what your ser
vants say when they have slammed the
door ; what a beggar says whose peti
tion . you have rejected ; what your
neighbors, say about your children ;

long wind; produced by hard exercise
I through all my youth in a far north
ern climate; he was narrow-chested,
and soon began to pant. Perceiving
this, I compressed. his ribs with my
whole strength, and, bending in’ liis
back, gradually brought him down on
the rock. But the. moment he was
down, he commenced struggling j vio
lently, and rolled ns both over toward
the awful brink. I thought I was
gone, and clutched the rough rock
with my fingers till the nails, were torn
from-them: Providentially, my hand
came against one of the rusted iron,
supports that had of old upheld the'
chain, and I grasped it with the clutch
commonly called the death-gripe.—
Holding on by this,' and getting my
legs about it so as to have a good purr
chase, while he still straggled ceasless-
ly with hand and teeth to dislodge me,
I caught hold Of the hair of liis tern-,
pies, and dashed liis head violently
against the rock. The blow affected
his brain ; the eyes, which had- just
been glaring upon me in ^ maniacal
fury, now rolled obliquely in their
sockets,, and his motions were no.
longer directed against me.: With
botn hands I repeated the blov.^ and
he remained motionless ; still I was not
snre of him, for I had read and' heard
that the insane are very cunning, and
adopt many schemes to accomplish
their ends; so, putting one hand to
his heart, and being able to perceive
only a very faint'and scarcely discern
ible beating, I got up and drew him
to the middle of the rock. Then rest
ing for a moment to breathe and to
thank Heaven that I had been saved
alive from this fearful enconnter, I
began to descend the rock, dragging
him after me, till I got on a secure
path, when I shouldered him, and
carried him to where we had left onr.
