The Dehand for Sewing Machines.
Probably no one invention has
come into such general use as the’sew
ing machine. The business of manu-r
factoring and selling tiiem, says the
Boston Commercial ‘Bulletin, has
grown np mainly within the past fif
teen years, but during the last texi
years has increased rapidly. There
are now made and sold annually in
the United States about 750,000 sew
ing machines, and in every city, town,
village, and hamlet these useful ma
chines are more or less in use. Some
of the largest manufacturers are now
running extra hours to keep up with
orders, and even then are frequently
unable to supply the demand. The
Massachusetts companies are doing a
large and remunerative business, many
of them exporting machines to all
jisrts of the world, particularly to Eu-
