ling, of Houston county, deceased,
and of Mrs. Sarah Stripling, who. sur
vives her.

religion, she bad for several years en
tertained a living hope of Heaven,
throngh her Lord and Master,. Jesus
Christ; and looked upon death as the
gate to eternal happiness. She died
the death of the righteous, feeling no
dread of the future, and concerned on
ly for her husband and the little ones
she was leaving behind. Her hus
band and seven children, together with
an extensive circle of relatives and
friends, mourn her departure.

Prayer Meetings.
Daily union prayer meetings have
been going ou for the past two weeks
alternately at the Methodist and Bap
tist churches, being conducted by
Revs. Mr. Campbell and Robeson.—
They have been well attended, and
much interest shown, and it. is espe
cially gratifying to see all uniting in
supplications to a thrque of grace.
All Christians are urgently invited to
attend, as well as all others who res
pect religion and desire an interest in
the prayers of God’s people. The
meetings will begin at 5:15 and end
promptly at six.

Killed by Iilgtuing-
During the storm last Sunday even
ing Ellison Porter, colored, generally
known here by the name of Ellison
Davis, was killed by a stroke of light
ning at Smyrna church six miles north
of Perry. It was about four o'clock
USd the church had just been dismis
sed. There were many negroes near
hy, but none were injured except El-
jison, though many were stunned
fiiore or less. The clap that caused
his death was heard distinctly at this
place. No break or bruise was found
on his body, aud he did not move af
ter bang struck. He was a carpen
ter by frade, and favorably known as
<juiet, tractable and honest boy,
Spring-Troubles Begun
Sykes Rily and his wife are having
a hard time pulling wool and banging
broomsticks. Last week Mrs. Sykes
had Sykes nrreste'd for using the right
of suffrage on herin the shape of a
good whipping. His employer, Char
lie Cooper’defended.him,and, obtained
his discharge, it being proved that
she was a shrew. Then she went
home mad. and fried to tnrh the plan
tation over. This led .toiler prosecu
tion’for the disturbance, bat Sykes,
with, the usual ingratitude, turned
against his . employer and deliverer,
andjinedhis wife again. - The case
will be fried to-day.
