According to Dr. Bellows, wheat!
consists of water, gluten, albumen,
starch, sugar, gum, fat, fibre and min- i

reason the flour absorbs more water
when mixed. The remainder of the
constituents are of a more compact
nature than those of Winter wheat.—

having continued over two weeks.—

day afternoon at Felton’s mill
Rev. Mr. Murrow, tn ss'onary to
the Indians, aud Rev. Mr. Folsom,
an Indian preacher, were here on
Monday. The latter delivered a ser
mon Monday night. There was a
large congregation out, and though
many went, doubtless, through mere
curiosity, the services were character
ized by great seriousness and solem
nity.
The first prayer was offered in the
Indian tongue, and though not one
word was intelligible to the audience,
yet so simple and humble wus the
preacher’s manner, so fervidly and
eloquently did his unknown language
seem to flow, that it -vas particu
larly touching -md affecting.
Many interesting, and some start
ling statistics were given in regard to
the red men of the West; and tout

There is much truth in this. The
thousands of dollars wasted annually
upon expensive almanacs, circnlars,

vertising, which, in company with
patent office reports, find their way to

Insurance Pcsts-
A friend of ours had a great antip
athy to life insurance agents, and made
a resolve to horribly mutilate the first
one that proposed to write a policy on
his corpus. Not many days passed
before youDg A. came along. Now
A. had a youthful face, and that with
his small stature softened the heart of
our iriend, and he informed A. that,
he would let him pass.. The next
agent that came along was Col. B.,
whose venerable gray hairs and feeble
step saved him from.a terrible fate.—
After that came Dr. R., whose, sacred
calling rendered his person inviolate.
Surely, thought, onr friend, “the next
man will be one that I can make an
example of for all time. My baffled
wrath will- yet find vent.” A week
passed by when lie was approached by
ii noble specimen of manhood. His
iron frame would have marked him as
some honest blacksmith,' or, perhaps,
a reformed prize fighter. Surely I
have a first-class client, now,—and he
rubbed his palms.
“What can I do for you, sir?”
“I represent,” said the stranger,
“the— Life Assurance Company,
and would like to consume a few min
utes of your time recommending the
importance of insurance. Yon are
likely at any moment to depart on
your journey to -‘that bourne irom
whence no'traveler veturns.' You may
leave your family desolate. You should
proride for them a legacy that the
misfortunes and vicissitudes of life
will not effect, etc.,”—and for a solid
half hour his eloquent appeals were
laid before our friend,
said:
“Shall I write it ten thousand?’’—
and paused.
“My friend,” was thereply, “I have
sworn a terrible vengeance agrinst
3'our class, and nothing but your her
culean size now protects you. Go thy
way and sm no more.”
Any agent can dow bore our friend
without the least fear of bodily harm;
and we think some enterprising man
will yet write a policy’ on his life.

The Ladle*’ Column. -
In answer to the communication in
onr last issne on the. above subject,
we will cheerfully give our lady friends
a column each week. We are not an
adept in the wondorfnl art of pleasing
the fair ones, and the mysteries of
dress, harmony, contrast, etc., we can

call on tbe spicy pen of “Farmer’s

ideas,” which may embrace every sub
ject in nature, from the most obstrnse
philosophical disquisition to the
important question as to the best man
ner in which to bake a bisenit or train

Young states that this crust may con
sist of n more or less continnons sheet
of descending rain—not of ■ water, of
ermrse, but of the materials whose
vapors are known to exist in 'the
solar atmosphere. As this tre
mendous rain descends, the velocity
of all the falling drops would be re
tarded by the resistance of the denser
gases underneath, and the drops
would eventually coalesce until a con
tinuous sheet would result, and sever
al of these sheets uniting, would form
a sort of bottomless ocean, resting

and pierced by innumerable jets and
