But now it .seems to roe you act
As if you were non-suited.

You know the points; why will you then

I make no dflnbiy plea;
I’m driven to distraction!
Unless I soon obtain relict

At first a civil suit I’ll bring
At Cupid's special session;

Transit of Vcnni-
> Telegrams imm various sources re
port tho successful observation of the
transit of Venus; The elaborate and
costly- expeditions sent to so many
points of the_enrtli, to.note Uje move
ment of the. planet as it passes across
tlio centre of tho solar .system, pro
vokes inqniry ns to tlifc object. The
Baltimore American gives the i cason
briefly, thus:
Tho primary object is to ascertain
the distance of the snn from the earth
which, once fixed, will enable us to
determine tho distance of all tho*va
rious members of the planetaiy sys
tem from tho earth .and from each
other, even to that of Neptune "so far
removed that one of its days is a cyc-
lo of out years, whilst the' warmth of
the rays of the snn never readies its
perpetual ice and snow. On r distance
from tho snn is a Yardstick for meas
uring other celestial distances, and
when that is once definitely.' known,
wo have a positive basis- to go upon
for measuring space. The prelimina
ry trouble is that there are millions of
miles of difference in the various esti
mates of the distance between the
earth and the sun. The ancient as
tronomers fixed it at five millions of
miles; but Enoke calculated it at nine
ty-five millions, which has been the
common acceptation tip to thc-prcsent
time. But the object to be-attained
is absolute certainly, and the supposi
tion is that the modern perfection of
science would attain this from observa
tions of the recent trausit of Venus.
It is the claim of scientists that it will
euablc them to arrive at a certainty in
' their work and demonstrate it to the
popular comprehension. Under such
conditions it is not difficult to under
stand the value of these observations.
The first observation of transit was
in 1G36 by Jeremiah Horrocks, a
young nstonemer. The crude manner
of his proceedings is thus told:
He darkened his room and let in
sunlight on a sheet of white paper,
through an aperture in a window
shutter. It was Sunday, . and the
.. pious astronomer watched his paper
till it was time to go to church. This
duty he would not neglect,--although
-another opportunity to witness the
transit of Venus, and demonstrate the
wisdom of some years’ study and la
bor,'he kuew, would not be offered
for a century. Returning from church
in the afternoon, he resumed his ob
serration, and thus describes what fol
lowed; “At this time an opening in
the clouds, winch rendered the sun
distinctly visible, seemed as if Divine
Providence encouraged my aspirations
vriieu, oh most gratifying spectacle,
the object of so mauy earnest wishes!
I perceived a spot of unusual magni
tude ami perfectly round, which lia I
just entered upon the left limb of the
sun.”
With tho perfected ins'rumentation
of the present day the desired object
seems to have been obtained, and as
tronomy, which is said to have “stood
still for a thousaud years, from Pron-
emt to Kepler.’’ has at last made a
step forward which may astonish, ben
efit and enlighten the world.
