, Carpenters Wanted.
Quitman can afford work for eight or ten more
and judging from the way work is
aW'ssing he re now. that number could obtain
employment, at remunerative wages.
Citizen
T Mr. It. Bentley, one of our oldest and most
MOaneeted citizens, died at his residence, in this
TBi. on the morning of the tltli inst., after a
illness of ten days. His funeral services
took place yesterday, at the Baptist Church.
“ Quitman's Thirsty Flcaß.
On our first page will be found Zena's opinion,
in verse, of the quality, capacity and ferocity of
‘ Quitman’s thirsty fleas.” What terrible little
monsters they are: even now we feel them mar
haling for a feast, and it is impossible for us to
oroeeed with a decent compliment to the gifted
author of their immortality.
m
Sale of Town Lots.
‘j ae Judges of the Inferior Court, in accordance
■ - I th their advertisement, proceeded, on Tuesday
* > . . to sell all the lots owned by the county, in
* Fown of Quitman. The attendance was not
v. , large, but the bidding was spirited and
1 ’ .- ranged pretty high. Business lots in the
. hborhood of the Court House square, meas
* g 50 by 100 feet, brought from SSO to $l5O,
■ I.me 10 by 105, fronting on the square, went
* high as $205. Lots for residences, gardens,
et on the outskirts of the town, ranged from
$. all the way up to S3OO. Terms, credit till
■unary, with small notes and good security.
Widows and Orphans.
Our correspondent is upon the right track,
wc sincerely hope his suggestions may be
aptly and heartily seconded by every man
and woman in the County. It is a work of the
loftiest benevolence, and calls forth the noblest
contributions ot the human heart
We will be most happy to hear from our friend
again, and to assist him, and others, in carrying
out the object proposed.
The llat. —A most wonderful institution is tbe
hat, and to man's conifcrt fr.V E 55!' 0 essential than
boots; and although it is frequently the means of
getting one into difficulty, it is none the loss a
hat, and an indispensable article of dress. There
are a great many kinds of hats—old hats and new
hats, straw hats, wool hats, leghorn, and Panama,
Derby, otc.; and then there is the new- style, called
tho Tropical Hat, just suited to this climate, looks
well as long as it lasts, and costs so little that
anybody can afford to try one. J. M. Edmond
son & Cos. have them at their store, where they
keep everything else nearly for sale. Call and
examine for yourself, and if you are as poor as
an editor,"why, they will make you a present of

Thanks.—To some “friend,” unknown to the
' Bunn er office, we are indebted for a copy of a
German paper of literature, published in New
York, which has a name, but it is a regular jaw
breaker, and we are afraid to put it in the mouths
of our readers. To our German friend- latefy
imported, it is quite a treat, and our unknown
“friend” will greatly oblige us by repeating the
favor.
Tie Tax on Cotton and Tobacco.
The Philadelphia Inquirer puts down
the revenue from the cotton tax at soo,-
000,000, on a crop of two millions of
hales, and double that on a crop of four
millions. The tax on Tobacco is $ 18,000,
besides other heavy taxes on Southern
products. On the other hand, the taxon
chiefly Northern products is to be re
duced to seventy-five millions, as per the
following table :
Hoots and Shoes $4,400,000
Sheating and yellow* metal, 70,000
Clothing 11,000,000
Income tax 20,000,000
Pig iron,.,! 2,000,000
Paper, books, Ac.., 2,072,000
Crude petroleum, 2,100,000
Slaughtered animals 1,200,000
mights, .4,850,000
■Tobacco 650,000
Tax, 12,000,000
The radicals in Congress arc thus show
ing a disposition to ruin the South by
heavy imposts on our chief staples, hut
we question whether they will make
much by the opetation. It is the old
story of “killing the goose that laid the
golden egg.” The Southern, “goose”
should retire from the business, before
decapitation.
Cotton mills of large capacity are now
being erected at Kaimia, S. C., near Ai
ken, in which it is intended to manufac
ture ail kinds of cotton goods. In con-
Inection with the establishment a first
’ class paper mill is to be built.

INCREASE OF RATS.- The Farmer’s Gazette
(English) asserts and proves by figures that one
pair of RATS will have n progeny and descend
ants no less than 651,050 in three years. Now,
unless this immense family can be kept down,
they would consume more food than would sus
tain 65.000 human beings.

RATS versus BIRDS.- Whoever engages in

this business.-' -Scientific American , .V. Y.
