' fhr tfjuitiwm iJattncL LOCAL COLUMN: QUITMAN, MARCH 15, 1867. TakeN'otire: Subscribers to the Banner, ih the town of Qnitman, as well as those in the Coun try, who receive their mail from the Quit man post office,'are notified that they will hereafter call at the office of publication for their papers. We make this arrange ment as a matter of convenience to pat rons. The Banner office will be open during business hours, every day except Saturdays, on which day it will be closed at 1 o’clock p. m. The Kuiglits of Jericho. This temperance organization is now in full blast and nourishing condition, in the town of Quitman, and accessio. s arc being made to its ranks weekly. The members of the Lodge have in rehearsal the popular and difficult drama of “'lhe. Drunkard, or the Fallen saved," and will, in a few weeks, be in proper condition to furnish a creditable and agreeable enter tainment to the public. The object of which is to realize funds to properly fur nish the Lodge room of the order. Dr McCall's Cologne We are under many obligations to Dr. J. 11. McCall for a present of a verr hand some bouteille of cologne, manufactured by himself, and which is pronounced by the ladies as fully equal to the celebrated Fau de Cologne of France. Dr. McCall can supply his customers in any quanti ty, and at reasonable rates, with this ad vantage: you will get a genuine article of cologne, whilst the sealed imported articles are generally adulterated. Dr. McCall keeps on hand at his Drug Store, in Quitman, a general assortment of drugs, medicines, paints, oils, etc., 'which will be sold at fair prices. Ttie Show \We atteuded Mike Lipman’s grand show, during its visit to Quitman, last week. The riding was 'otlly passable, the leaping and somersets •Atraordinary, the dogs interesting, the 'CiiWvns very poor, the monkey was scan ‘rlsllous, and the bear a humbug. On the ’frWle, it is a good sho\v for the enter- WfHitncnt cf lazy meu—it will do to kill tlWe. The Justice’s (Jour* These District tribunals t f justice have been suspended in the County of Brooks for several years, although the officers | have been regularly elected and commis-1 sioned. Wc are pleased to announce j that, in thlSj the Quitman District, they j arc to be revived, and that Henry F. Mannrrr, Esq | will hereafter regularly hold a Justice’S Oonrton the third Satur day iu each moltlh, at his office in the town of Quitman, Uefbrc which all suits involving fifty dollars, or less, can be ad judicated. Squire Madbstt is an educated, dis creet, and honorable gentleman, and full justice will he awarded in every Case brought before him. The Growth of Quitman. A gentleman paid our sanctum a visit, j a few days ago, and expressed great stir- j prise at the unparalleled rapidity by j which the “Atlanta of South Georgia” (as he was pleased to term our town,) had sprung into existence. Ilis last visit ; to this section was about eight years ! ago, and the present site of Quitman, was, ! at that time, an unbroken forest. And such is a fact. Less than seven years ago j the site of our present prosperous thriving and beautifal town, was a pine forest. Wealth, enterprise, energy a: and muscle have been lavish in their expenditures, and we can now point to the result : the most prosperous interior town in the State. Last year, in the neighborhood of one hundred buildings were erected— some of them magnificent brick struc tures—and the mechanic's saw, hammer and plane continue to notify, us, from early morn till dewy eve, that the work of improvement and progress still goes j •on. Ti e rise, progress and prospective future of Qnitman, stands without a par- | allel at the South. A. Model Teacher!?) I Understanding that a white woman, from some unknown latitude, had made j her appearance in our midst, and had opened a school for the education of the : “freedmen,” we dispatci ed a Special Re porter to the locality designated as her "Head Quarters,” for the purpose of as certaining the facta in the premises. The Reporter faithfully performed his duty, and the following is the result: He found one Mr3. Emily Armstrong, a rather dilapidated female, of a very un certain age, a boarder in a ove roomed log cabin, owned and occupied by ne groes. The said Mrs Armstrong inform ed him that she was born and raised in 'Georgia was run out of Madison County, Fla., and had recently arrived in "Nigger foot," east of "Ficklinville," dark subur bial Tillages Southeast of Quitman, and that she had opened a school for the edu cation of freedmen on Monday last. On that day she had exercised the preroga tive nf a “school inarm,” and had flogged five littH “niggers;” on the following day she had administered the lash to ten, ( and our Reporter concluded that if she ftontined to double her chastisements L daily, she would soon have the backs of L all negrodom in Brooks well 6trlped. very politely informed our reporter she intended to keep an .rdeily and school” —that she taught the MJt Prayer,” reading and writing. l||V' C tr-d soon to teach “G grsphy” ■ %maticks.” Not deeming it noc !§■ roe« fnrtl.i r ir.vi *i_--ttr.. i.- Jgfcl d<-em it our duty ■ ; '■;< • the ' |ifji ’ V«r gtiaid in f'-r t' this “school itiarm,” tvho has squatted amdttg them, ostensibly for tilts purpose of instructing them. She is a low char acter, devoid if principle, unworthy the attention of the most debased, and has already been fun out nf Florida, on ac count of her filthy and abasing practices. All She tfatits is your money. She is incompetent to teach your children, and is a tom pie te swindle. Wc would lie pleased to see a good school established in out midst, by com petent and gentlemanly instructors, for the education of the “freedmen,” for we believe that It would eventuate not only in benefit to this class of otif pdplilation, but be of immense advantage Id the whites and the country at large j but the introduction among them of such women as the one now domiciled in "Nigger-foot," will do them, the whites and the country an injury. We advise our colored friends to beware of her, and give a w-ide berth to her “headquarters.” New Firm It will be seen by reference to the ad vertisement elsewhere, that the late firm of I. evekett & Wattles, has been dis- I solved, and that of Lkverktt, Stanch. & Renfrow takes its place. We wish the new firm much success aud great pros perity in business, and bespeak for it a liberal share of patronage.
