fi@“ We would direct the attention of
our readers to the advertisement -of
Messrs. llarrai., Risi.ev, & Cos., wholesale

servedly popular Southern Drug House.
The senior partners, will he remembered
as having conducted the business of

Big" A telegraph office has been estab
lished at the Quitman depot, and Mr.
Haines, of Augusta, has been assigned
as operator. This will be a groat conve
nience to business men, and Mr. Haines
will be found an intelligent and acccorn
modating gentleman, constantly at bis
post, and ready to serve the public.
*©-Wc direct special attention to the
U. S. Tax notice from H. F. Mabbett,
Esq. l'weuty days arc allowed the peo
ple in which they must sc tie the small
amounts due the government ; and all
who fail to comply will be dealt with
as the law directs—which is to add a
■certain per cent to the tax. Our people
therefore, will servo their own interest
to be prompt in paying Collector Mabbett
a visit.
#©* Capt. James L. Moseley, the Gen
eral Agent of the Banner, strayed off
from Quitman a few days ago, and by a
correspondence published elsewhere, it
will be seen that he has turned up in the
city of New York. When he left here
he was sorely afflicted with the “Hondu
ras fever,” but it is now evident that that
affliction has been superceded by a vio
lent “ Steamboat ” and “Hotel” fever.
We hope the Captain may have a
“gay time” in the “fast city” and return
with a princely revenue for the Banner.
The editor of the Brunswick Courier
says that starvation has not yet entered
his house, but is standing at his door,
and asks his patrons to furnish him pro
visions in lieu of money. Oar brother
has company in his misfortune: the pa
trons of the Banner have no money, and
they say they have no provisions. In
fact, some of them say they have had
neither money nor provisions during the
past eighteen mouths.
The Father of Lies at Work.
Mr. Fildes: Dear Sir, —Hearn that the
Radicals are using every effort possible
to gull the freedmen in our country, and
induce them to join tlieir so-called “Loyal
League.” An honest and trustworthy
colored man informs mo that it was rep
resented to lrim and a number of others,
that the Democrats wished to have guar
dians appointed for the freedmen, as it
was customary to do before the aboli
tion of slavery. I notify you of this fact,
that as a public sentinel, you may warn
the freedmen of the imposition sought to
be practiced on them by these professed
friends, but real enemies. I told the
freedman, from whom I obtained my in
formation, that the representations made
to him were totally false—that it was
the Radical party that placed them un
der the guardianship ol Bureau Agents,
and kept them there to advance their
own interests. His reply was, “I have
no use for the Bureau, and never had, all
they want is this” (slapping the pocket
that contained his cash.)
I advised my informant, as he was
free, to keep himoolf on, and not bind him-
Belf by oatb to vote the ticket of any po
litical party, but when the elections come
on, to vote for the men in whom he had
the most confidence. *• S. *.

S-y We have but little confidence in the trum
pet tongned statements of Die proprietors of ad
vertised medicines generally, but wo are forced
to concur in the opinion, nniformerly expressed
by all who have used Perry Davis’ Pain Killer,
that it is a very valuable article, and one tiiat it
would be well for every household to have at
hand, in case of bruises, scalds, burns, diarrhoea
dysentery, cholera, fever and ague, and tho host
of diseases, external and internal, which it is
adapted to cure or alleviate. No article of med
icine ever attained to such unbounded populari
ty and extensive diffusion. It has penetrated to
every part, even the most remote, of tho known
world, bearing with it its healing influences more
potent than those of the spices of “Araby the
blest.” We are inlormed by our principal drug
gists, that they sell more of this article for ex
portation than any or all others, and that the de
uiand is constantly increasing.—Salem Oiisekveb.
