Ik‘ant!ful, but O! so sa<l. is the story of the dead wife's portrait, and sad "and beautiful tliongh it be. is too often true. We have been in more than o ,e bouse in our time where the semblance of the departed, who had once been the light and life of the household, was consigned to the dust and cobwebs of the garret, and her memory lo forgetfulness ; r in' a lumbering attic room Where for want of light and ai*, Years had died within the gloom. Leaving dead dust everywhere, Hung the portrait of a lady With a fact? so fair. Time had long since dull’d the p lint ; * Time, which alt moun ts disguise. And the b atures now were lain!. All - the wondrous eyes. Wondrous ey es ! Ever looking, looking, looking, With such sad surprise! As man loveth. man had loved Her whose features faded there; As man mourneth man had mourned, Weeping in his deep despair Bitter tears. When she left him broken-hearted, To his death of years. Then for montlis the picture bent All its eyes upon his face, Following him where’er he w ent, Till another filled the place 111 its stead Till the feature of the living Did outface the dead. There for years it hung above in that attic dim and ghost* Fading With the lading love, Sad reminder of the past ; Ever looking, cv.-r looking. With such sad surprise. Oft the distant laughter’s sound Enter’d through the cobweb’s door, And the cry of children found Dusty echoes from the floor To those eyes. _ Ever looking, ever looking, With such sad surprise. Once then* moved upon the stair Olden love steps m mating low, But the face ilia: m * him there Drove him to the depth below, For those eyes Through his smil seemed looking, looking, j All their sad surprise. From that day the door was nailed Os that mem uy-hau ue 1 room ; And the portrait hung nil 1 paled On the dead dust and the gloom, Save the eyes. Ever looking, ever looking. With such sad surprise! A Memphis paper gives the following advice to the people of the South. The people of the South need not re main idle. As the world is governed by money, let them get money. When they do they will he respected. They will be respected and slobbered over by the wretches who now hate them beeuse they are proud and have no money, Hold on to your lands. The monied • lords of the North want to dispossess you of them, for then they know that you will be in their power. So long as you hold them you are masters of the situa tiori. Act upon the fact that the Rad icals are attempting* to impoverish you j and drive you out of the couutiy. W illi I this ever i liyour minds, grasp your lands with a death grip and if necessary, face j starvation itsi If before you give way. If they cannot dispossess you by purchas es they will resort to legislation ami at ; tempt to tax you into acquiescence. Jt has been suggested that lhe three! cent tax mnv he avoided by manufactu-1 ring the cotton in the district where it | is grown. That, if practicable, would be only a temporary relief. Your enemies would tax it at the gin, in the boll, in the blossom, and, if necessary is tin ground. They intend to tax it out ol existence, if they fail to drive you from your plantations Go into the hug and hominy business. Raise corn and slaughter pork. Cover your hills with cattle and punctuate our pastures with sheep, mules and horses, and flavor the whole with showers of goats. Teach the freedman that he is a South ern man, to the cabin horn, and that his destiny is launched oil the same billow that now heaves beneath the white man. Be just to him, and the day may come when you may lean upon him as a rock. Cultivate the eaith to the best advan tage, and never fail to have your bt.ru full. But do not neglect to cultivate letters. A Remarkable Record- We heard on yesterday the following statement-, which is certainly one of the most remarkable that we ever remember to have seen on record. A gentleman and his wife arc now liv ing in Pontotoc county, Miss, liis weight is 275 poprids, and that of his wife 140. They have seventeen children, nine sons and eight daughters, all living, and all married. They all have children, and some of them grandchildren. There has not b en a death in the farm ; ily from tli; time of the marriage of the great-grandfather down to the present time, and the family now numbers one hundred members. The great-grandfather was a soldier at the battle of New Orleans. Six ol his sons were in the Confederate army, and three of them were wounded and ta ken prisoners. All six are now farmers in North Mississippi. Dallas county a few days since beat Illinois on the potato question. Can she compete with Mississippi on the record above presented ?— Selma ( Ala.) Times. A punctual man is rarely a poor man, and never a man of doubtful credit. His small accounts are frequently settled and he never meets with difficulty in raising money to pay large demands. Small debts neglected, rein credit, and, when a man has lost that, lie will find himself at the bottom of a hill he cannot ascend. Human existence liangs upon trifles. What would beauty do without soap 1 F. R. FILDES, Editor. VOL. 11. ! The lloniaucc of Milton. No one can read that grand poem, ! 'Paradise Lost,’ without giving a thought jto Milton. There are many heautiful j passages in it that are said to have been j inspired by a romantic incident. In Ins | youth, the p iet was remarkably hand some, and one summer day while lying fast asleep beneath a tree, two ladies approached the spot, and admired as they thought, unobserved, the fair and radiant lace of the slumberer. The youngest, a very handsome woman, pres ently drew a pencil from her pocket, and, alter hastily writing a few lines, thrust tno paper into the half open hand of Milton, when both ladies silently departed irom the scene. It happened that some of the friends of the poet were in tho same Wood, though some distance from where lie lay sL.-ping, ami that they are witnesses to all that had trans pired. When the ladies were out of sight they advanced to the particular tree, roused Milton from his sleep, told him of the circumstance that li id awaken I ed their curiosity, and asked him to cx ! amine lhe slip of paper in his hand, lie j did so and read, "Ye eyes ! ye human j stars ! ye authors of my liveliest pan ;s ! I if thus when shut, ye wound me, what must have proved the consequente had ye been open V Thu adventure made a deep impression on the mind of .Millon, and Ins intense ! eagerness to lind out the fair incognita j led him to wander all over Italy in hopes |of discovering her. llis lively imagin ation picture.l her as a radiant flower, a being of surpassing lovliuess, in fact an angel, and dreaming or waking he never forgot his unknown admirer, lie wor shipped her as an ideal, the h roiuo of a beautiful romance, and lie clothed her with the favor of llis poetry. Even when blindness came to him with old age, lie remembered the incident of his .tooth, and it is bei eveil that its rcniern berauce inspired some of the grainiest passages in that grandest of poems, th_’ most sublime of epics, "Paradise Lost,” The romance certainly is a beautiful one and the lovers of the beautiful would not willingly have it destroyed. We appre ciate unknown friends the highest, love worship them, if you will, b- cause they are associated with the ideality of the stary home beyond theskies. We have faith in them, ami, knowing nothing of their actual existence, fancy is f.ec to paint them in the softest and brightest colors. A corrcspoiidcrit of tho London i’all Mull Gazette writes as follows : "I have frequently been on duty in the county jail at Cork, and have been struck with the singularly wan and ernaneiated ap pearance of the prisoners. Once hap pening to detect a peculiarly hungry looking convict employed in cleaning the guard room, in the act of swiftly CO tceal; ing a piece of meat from the piled up heap, about to be cooked for the men’s dinner, ,a theft, by-tbe-bye, 1 did not think of reporting), 1 inquired of the gate keeper, ‘How often do the prisoners have meat issued to them V ‘Oust a year—every Christinas day,” was the response.” An anxious enquirer asks : “\\ hat can he a more desolate sight than an old maid sitting on an inverted half bushel, in a cold kitchen, with her feet on the rim of a .slop bucket, paring her corns with a ease knife, by the light of a tallow caudle ?” A man who got drunk at an election said it was owing to his efforts to ‘put down party spirits.’ An Emtoeial Delight. —To have your friends come in and read your old exchan ges aloud to you.
