QUITMAN, APRIL 23, 1869.
WgrCol. Spaiu offers for sale a large
quantity of field peas—an article in
great demand Ljr planters. See notice.
Wc take pleasure in again referring
to the card of Messrs. E. \\ r . Drummond
& Bro., of Savannah. Prompt and reliu
-I'le, they will give satisfaction in every ,
instance.
Strawberries. —We are under obliga
tions to Col. B. W. Sinclair for a dish j
of deiicioua strawberries, grown in hi* i
immense garden about two miles from |
Quitmau. We suppose Col- S. has the j
largest garden and finest assortment -of
these berries in Southern Georgia. lie j
has made their culture a speciality on hisj
farm, and is now rewarded, ycany, with'
an immense yield. We suppose he will
soon have them on the market, and par
ties can he supplied at moderate rates
ag we never kuew the Colonel to ex
tortion.
Rauoiocs. —We are pleased to an
nounce that Elder H. G. Fuller, of the
Primitive Baptist Church, will preach at j
Quitman on the third Sunday in May.
This learned divine always attracts im- j
mouse congregations, for iie presents the
truths of the Scriptures in their native
simplicity.
May Party.—Arrangements have been
made, by the Sunday Schools in Quit
man, for a May party on the first of said
mouth. It will take place in the neigh
borhood of town, and everybody are in
vited to be crescni and participate in
the festivities of the occasion. Anting
orators have been selected to entertain
and instruct, by their eloquence ; and
the “ little oucts” are ail looking forwaid
to a gala day. God bless them !we
hope they may enjoy themselves to their
hearts’ content, und naught occur to
mar their happiness."
Didatisg Society.— We learn that this
Society is prospering, and the young
me« improving their minds by the inter
change of ideas. Meetings are held
every Monday uight and great zeal man
ifested in the II c do not think
the society is acting right however, by ,
excluding the public. Throw your doors j
open, gents, and if you wdl not permit]
an indiscriminate piiblic.to enter, pass
•‘tickets" to the ladies, editors and—“old
balcticlors.”
Ocr Associate took his departure front
Quitman on last Monday, with the de
sign of spending a few days aud becorn- |
ing acquainted with the people of Last j
Florida. We hope our friends in that S.aAe j
will take good care of him, and not fail j
to give hint all necessary information in
reference to good JiahivQ places! .He de
signs spending a month or two, during j
the summer, on the of some ■
jxmd, in that State, provided sufficient j
angling inducements are afforded.
The Prospect. —Reports from various 1
portions of this county, satisfy us that j
the recent cold weather did not materi— j
ally injure the crops. Planters arc of j
good cheer, and delighted with the situ
ation at present.
Work for the Mar-iial. —We call the
attention of our Town Marshal, to the
disorderly conduct of the negroes almost
every night, at the Railroad depot.—
They congregate there an hour er more
before the arrival of the 11 o’clock train,
and by ioud swearing and o sc tie con
duct make night hideous. These offen
ders against the peace and order of the
town are principally uegro women. On
last Monday night they engaged in sev
eral fights to the disgust of the few
whites present.
Tbe Negroes of Quits a it. —The ne
groes ot Quitman are becoming more
and more insulting, and defiant towards
the whites every day. They boldly |
preach insubordination to all law ; and i
if advised of the error of their course, re-1
tort with curses and threats. Now this ]
will not do ;it cannot he tolerated. If
they have no respect for the laws—for
peace aud order —and arc determined to
precipitate violence, we tell them plainly
the whites will be prepared to meet them
wth more stubborn arguments than
words. We have deprecated harsh treat
ment towards this unfortunate race fi.r
they are ignoraut and depraved, aud t! e
delusion has been nurtured, that in time
they would became industrious, peaceful
members of society; hut as time advan-
ces, it is evident t<i every reflecting
mind that forbearance has been received
for cowardice, and wise counsel aud kind
encouragement as decoys lor future en
slavement. Under these circumstances,;
forliearance will soon cease to he a vir- ]
tup; and the order loving portion of the
community he forced to resist insolence
and violence.
Godey’s Lady’s Book.— The May Bum
her of this excellent magazine has been
received, and presents its usual
tions. It is the oldest, best and most
popolar magazine in America.
