A Noma: Youth Who Couldn’t Drink
'Vine, —Then* was a noble youth who,
n being urged to take wine at the table
ot a famous statesman in Washington,
hao the moral courage to refuse. He
was a poor y -ung man, jusi beginning
the snuggle of life He brought letters
to the statesman, who k odly invited
him homo to dinner.
"Not take a glass of wine?” said the
great statesman, in wonderment and
supprisn.
"Not one simple glass of wine?” ech
oed the statesman’s beautiful ami facinaL

and, with a grace that would have
charmed an anchorite, endeavored to
pi * ss it upon h m.
"No,” said th heroic youth, resolutely,
gently repelling the pr«»tiered glass.
What a picture of moral grandeur was
that! A pour, friendless youth refusing
wine at the table fa wealthy aud l»-

"No,” said the noble young man, and

I niH, her. she was thin anil oM,
She Htooprd and trod with tottering h-et; j
Her locks were gray that once were gold, I
Her voice was 'harsh that once was sweet;
Her cheeks were sunken and her eyes,
Robbed of their girlish light of joy
Were dim; I felt a strange surprise
That I had loved her when a boy.
But yet a something in her air
Restored me to my youthful prime;
My heart grew young and seemed to wear
The impress of that long lost time;
I took her wilted hand in mine,
Its touc h awoke a world of joy;
I kissed her with a reverend sigh.
For J had loved her when a boy!
