Mcinnrinl Day.
Saturday next is “Alemorial-Day,” and it will
be duly observed throughout the South; and
Wherever rest a soldier of the “Lost Cause,”
there Will gather the beauty and manhood ol the
'and to pay a tribute to-valor, and lay garlands
upon the mounds of the heroic dead. And this
sacred duty will be discharged with cheerfulness,
for the great sacrifices malic by our fallen he
roes are still Iresh in memory, and gratitude is
is the predominating virtue with true men and
women llyoughout the land where the“stars And
bars” once guily floated in the breeze as the
emblem of Liberty, Justice and Truth.
To the care of Quitman has been confided the
remains ol fifteen or twt*(y of the hero dead
They are mostly strangers, buried in a strange
land, far away from the homes of sheir boyhood,
and the scenes of riper 'years; there is here no
sister's tender hand to weave garlands of immor
tallrs to deck the narrow chambers of death—
their is no fond mother present to plant the
weeping-willow and water II with her tears no
faiber, brother or relative to care for the mem
ory ol the stranger dead. Nome fell in the fore
rank of battle, breasting the leaden storm—some
from wounds received whilst storming the ram
parts of a validol host—others died from disease
contracted in camp. They all yielded their live*
In the noble struggle for liberty and the rights
of man. And here their remains repose. It Is
our duty, then, yea, a pleasure, to cate for the
Stranger dead, «nd on each return of “Memorial
Day” to yield a tribute to their memory.
On Saturday, therefore, the citizens—ladies,
gentlemen and children—will meet at tha school
house of Mr. Andrew J. .Sparks, opposite the
"Mclntosh House,” at 4 o’clock in the evening.
A procession will there be formed and march to
the Cemetery. The “Quitman Cornet Band,”
wo presume, will kindly consent to furnish mus
ic on the occasion. An address will bo deliver
ed by one of our citizens. The ladies will, of
course, be well supplied with beautiful garlands.
To the Ladies of Qllltmim.
The noble ladies of Quitman, composing the
■■Ladies' Memjrial Society ,” are .continuing their
efforts for the improvement of our Cemetery; and
with this laudable object in view, have conclud
ed to have a Fair on Thursday, the 15th day of
May. To make their efforts more effective, they
desire to interest all the ladies of the town in
the noble work—not only devising and making
something lor the tables—but also to attend
their meetings. They desire to make it a perma
nent organization; and to Ibis end they invite
all Oie ladies to meet them at the residence of
Mrs. Joslab Paine, on next Tuesday week, the
Stb ot .May, at 3 o'clock, p. m.
AVe trust every lady in Qnitman will attend
this very important meeting, and although they
may not take part In its deliberations, their
presence will be encouraging to the persevering
little band, who have, for months, been strug
gling to accomplish a noble and Christian Work*
They deserve great praise for their untiring la
bors and the devotions manifested in battling
against almost Insurmountable obstacles.
The Fair proposed oft the 15th of May we feel
sanguine will prove a success, for with snch per
severing and determined ladies as Mrs. Avera,
Airs. Paine, Mrs. Rountree, Airs Sweet, Miss
Anna Mclntosh, and others, there Is no such thing
as failure.
Notice will be given of the place at Which the
fair will be the colaamsof the next

Assault with Intent to Kill.
On last Friday morning two . youag bloods,
David Russell and M. Myeraon, met at the A. it
G. R.R Depot and had an altercation, which
grew bo spirited that the former “went for” the
latter with a chair—which weapdh was rendered
ineffective by tho party ot tho second part “get
ting out of the way. ” Not corttent to lot tile
object of his wrath “depart In peace,” at this
slave of the scene Russell drew his pistol and
fired at Myerson—the ball just grazing his neck,
but doing no injury.
Mr. Russell was arrested by the town Marshal;
who left hltti standing on the Street, with direc
tions tb "Wait there rthtil be gtit back”—he hav
ing gfftne business to attend ttt in another part of
the town. Russell “waited” until he was told
that Myerson was engaged in making affidavit lor
a warrant, charging hint with assault toiA intent
to kill. This evidently alarmed David, and con
cluding that he had “waited” long enough for
the Afarshal’s return, he suddenly disappeared.
The Marshal made dilligent search for him,
but without avail. The last we heard of the as
saulting gentleman, he was seen by a young
fisherman, running at the rate of fifteen knot* an
hour, and had Crossed a branch about ono mile
distant from town. *

Prosecution A bit ndimclt.
The prosecution before the United States Cir
cuit Court, now in session at Savannah, ofMessrs.
C. Brown and W. R. Lee, charged with a viola
tion of the enforcement Act, has been abandoned
by the U. S. Attorney. The charge preferred
against Abe parties, was, in our judgment, frivo
lous, and should never have been brought; but,
if the prosecuticwhad continued, although we
have no idea the parties Could have been con
victed of A violation of law, they would have
been subjected to great annoyunje and consid
erable expense. It was through the untiring
eflortß and personal pleadings of Col. E. C.
AVade (who accompanied Air. H. Biown to Sa
vannah, in the interestjof his son.) that the pros
ecution was abandoned.
May Festivities.
Our exchanges, almost without exception, an
nounce preliminaries for demonstrations in hon
or of beautiful 'May. The people, young and
old, in almost every town and village through
out the ‘‘Sunny South,” are bus 7 with prepara
tion for the festive occasion. Sabbath Schools,
Fire Companies, and the various Christian and
benevolent organizations in every town in Geor
gia, have anticipations ol a happy, jovial reun
ion. Dull care is to be laid aside, business
abandoned, and all to unite in a glad welcome
to Flora's favored month.
But, alas! we hear no notes of preparation in
our own beautiful town. What amusement will
the good people of Qnitman engage in unsaid
occasions AVe have three flourishing Gubhath
Schools, two or tilted prosperous day schools, a
large temperance organization, a Ure company,
a cornet, band, scores ofbeautifii! ladies, legions
of interesting children, enterprising men, and as
pretty and inviting green forests adjacent, as
any town In Southern Georgia. Now, all that
is necessary for a gala day, Is the manifestation
of just a little encfg> oil the part of the older por
tion of the population, ttfifi our wohl for it, the
young people will turnout en masse, nnd wt!
will all have an old-fashioned May festival.
