CHEAP CASH STOKE.
The attention of the reader will be at
tracted by the mammoth advertisement
of Mr. Nathan* Gazan. He is a liberal
patron of the press, because he considers
it the merchant’s duty to notify the pub
lic of the character and variety of goods
kept, so that the purchaser can save time
by being informed where he can procure
articles needed. Mr. Gazan has an ele
gant stock of goods—he sells for cash
turd at very fair rates. In the. clothing
line he has the best stock in town, and
Tather than carry it over to another sea
son, he is offering the same at cost. If
Jr on have not examined the general stock
kept by Mr. Gazan, we would advise you
to do so at once. It cannot be excelled.

HAIL STORM,
This section wits visited by a severe
storm on last Sunday evening. For up
wards of an hour the wind reached al
most the proportions of a huricane, and
the rain, interspersed with considerable
hail, poured'in torrents. But little dam
age was done in town beyond the demo
lition offences and shrubbery; but it
proved very destructive two'or three
miles west of Quitman. The plantat ions
and growing crops of Col. B. IV. Sinclair,
Messrs. E. Crane, J. T. Perdue, and
others, suffered to a considerable extent.
Col. Sinclair, besides other serious dam
ages, had a fifty acre field of magnificent
corn completely destroyed; Mr. E. Crane’s
growing crops were thoroughly ruined;
Mr. Perdue lost a very promising field of
oats, and nodoubt sustained other misfor
tunes. The storm was limited to a small
area of country; if it had been general,
the consequences would have been terri
ble.

THE CROPS.
In this county, as a general thing, the
crops are in fine condition. Corn is
looking remarkably well, the oat crop is
magnificent—better than for several
years past —and cotton, notwithstanding
the cold nights of April and early May,
is in a healthy condition, growing rap
idly, and bids fair to enable the planters
to gather an abundant harvest. In
some portions of the counfy there has
been too much rain, but as a general
thing it, has done no damage. There
fore we can safely say that the crops of
Brooks county are in remarkable good
condition,

HOUSE BURNED.
We are informed that tin 1 residence of
Mr. William Stanley, of this county,
some nine or ten miles South of Quitman,
was destroyed by fire on last Saturday
night. The family had retired, and at
about 12 o’clock were awakened, to dis
cover that the building, was in* flames.
They had barely time to escape, and wwe
forced to leave furniture and everything
else to the mercy of the fire-fiend. The
building was anew and handsome one;
and the total loss is estimated at 88,900.
There was no insurance on the property.
It is supposed to have been the work of
an incendiary.

At 2 o’clock on last Tuesday morning,
a large and elegant dwelling-house, about
one mile from Tallokas, in the upper
portion of Brooks county, and known as
the “William Yates’ place,” wasjdiscover
cd on fire. The flames spread rapidly,
and in a few minutes the was re
duced to ashes. The property belonged
to Mr. J. W. Wells, of the firm of Mose
ley, Wells & Cos., and was valued at
82,500. It was a total loss, there being
no insurance on the samq. Tho premis
es were in charge of a Mr. Harrell, no
fire had been about the building during
the day, and consequently the torch
must have been applied by an incendia

Picnic near Cherry Lake, I'M or i da.
On last Friday morning, in company
with the “Quitman Cornet Band,” and
by special invitation from the good peo
ple residing in tho neighborhood of Cher
ry Lake, we left Quitman to join a hap
py and hospitable throng, assembled in a
beautiful grove intervening between the
plantations of Messrs. John McNair and
Jack Coffee, in Madison county, and near
the Georgia line. We reached the place
designated at about 101 o’clock, and
were cordially welcomed and made to feel
comfortable, by kind and generous hearts,
who know how to dispense true hospital
ity.
The Band wagon baited on the foot of
the hill on which was assembled a vast
concourse of beauty, manhood and prat
tling innoeense; and it was cheering to
the hearts of every member of the Baud
to know, that the first piece of music et»
ecuted by it on Florida soil, was appreci
ated, and the shouts of applause were
really flattering, The “boys,” however,
could not long “retain ranks”—they had
human hearts and appreciative eyes, and
the array of beauty oil said hill was so
attractive, that the instruments were
speedily laid aside, and a promiscuous
intermingling ensued. Friends were re
united who had parted in the halcyon
days of childhood, ere dull care had shad
owed the pathway of life—when we rev
eled in enjoyment at the first institute of
learning founded in the now flourishing
town of Quitman,—and for hours all
were as merry as a marriage bell.
We have attended picnics whore more
persons were present than on this occa
sion, but candor demands the assertion,
that it never has been our privilege to
sp nd a day in social enjoyment, with
more accomplished, beautiful, hospitable
and entertaining ladies, and clever, ac
commodating gentlemen, than we met
with on Friday. Every one seemed hap
py, and appeared determined to contrib
ute to the enjoyment of others; and to
thc< Band especially was every kindness
and courtesy extended. Popular and
sentimental airs were called for by the
ladies, and promptly executed; and just,
before dinner was announced, a deputa
tion of three lovely daughters of the
“Land of Flowers” requested ihat “Dixie”
be executed. The Band responded, when
each lady advanced with a beautiful
cake, with Mr. C. <>. Moye in tho back
ground, bearing two decanters of spark
ling wine. These were presented to the
Band, and duly acknowledged by a few
impromptu remarks by a member of the
same. Os course “the hoys” felt happy.
For there stood three as lovely creatures
as God’s sun ever blessed with beauty,
life and knowledge-- Miss Lizzies Hines,
Miss Bailie E. Groover and Miss Mattie
Rossetter —and the offerings they pre
sented were as beautiful as their own
snowy brows and sparkling eyes. One
of the cakes bore the inscription, “For
flu' Quitman Cornet Hand,’’ and another,
“Here’s Luck.” As to the wine, it was
speedily sampled, and the verdict pro
nounced, that it was tho “best they'd
struck!” The cakes were reserved for
future dissection.
But let us return to the grove. The
table was lavishly spread with everything
to tempi tho palate and satiate the crav
ings of a hungry man. Fish, ham, t ur
key, chickens, roast pig, vegetables bread,
cake, pies, jellies, fruit, and indeed ev
erything, substantial and delicate, was
there in great abundance. It was en
joyed by all—and in one respect it ex
celled all picnics wo ever attended : there
was plenty of table room for every per
son oil the ground.
In behalf of the Band we arc author
ized to express many thanks for the
courtesy and kindness extended. The
distance from Quitman was considerable,
but the reward was amply remunerative;
and the good people of that section will
always find us ready to contribute to
their future happiness and welfare. Per
sonally, we are under many obligations
to Messrs. Move, McNair, Hawkins, Jim
mie Groover and Capt. Jack Coffee for
special favors and attention. *
