QUITMAN, JUNE 5, 1878.
Storm.— There was a considerable
storm in the upper portion of Brooks
county on last Saturday. The planta
tion of Mr. Owen Yates suffered severe
ly.
Icr. —Parties in need of ice can pro
cure the same of Chii.lt Mclntosh at
the store of Mr. M. C. Wade, at three
(3) cents per pound. This is very reas
onable, and will enable our citizens to
indulge in the luxury to a considerable
extent during the summer months.
Ku Kluxing.—Mr. Nathan Gazan
bids defiance to the terrible “K. K. K.,”
and 'offers clothing for sale at cost,
shoes at remarkable low figures, and ev
erything else on advantageous terms.
His goods are all of the very best quali
ty : “Shoddy” or “auction goods” not
kept at this house. Courteous clerks
are always ready to show goods.
See legal notice. Mr. H. S. Ful
ler, Administrator of the estate of Mrs.
M. A. Nbwton, applies for a dismission
from the further administration of said
estate.
The Quitman Cemetery.— Several
weeks ago we made announcement to the
effect, that the town authorities of Quit
man had purchased two acres of land
adjoining the cemetery, and that it would
lie incorporated with the same. The
purchase by the officials aforesaid was
not entirely satisfactory, so the “Ladies’
Memorial Association” took the matter
in hand, and it has paid for and now
owns the titles to the land referred to.
The Cemetery, increased in dimensions
by the addition of these two acres, will
now be properly enclosed by a substan
tial fence, and at an early day family
burial lots will be offered for sale —and
a revenue thus realized to reimburse the
ladies for the expenditure incurred.
It will be seen by the official citation
from Wm. G. Bentley, Clerk of Superi
or Court, and published in to-day’s Ban
ner, that the ladies have petitioned for
an order of Court, incorporating them
under the name of the “Quitman Memo
rial Association.”
Bee Hive au«l Honey Extractor.
We direct attention to the advertise
ment in to-day’s Banner, over the sig
nature of Mr. John A. Irvine, who has
purchasecLthe right for the State of
Georgia and East Florida, of Atkinson’s
Qceen Bee Hive and Honey Extractor,
which is protected by United States let
ters patent. It is the best hive in exis
tence, and by the use of the ext ractor,
the bees are enabled to husband their re
sources and furnish ten-fold the amount
of honey as is secured under the ordina
ry process. In our opinion one ordinary
hive will supply an abundance of honey
for a large family an entire year. The
price charged for the privilege of using
the hive and extractor 810.00— is very
reasonable, and we would advise every
family to avail itself of the privilege.
U. Ss. Revenue.
We are requested by Col. A. N. Wil
son, U. S. Internal Revenue Collector
for the First Georgia District, to call the
attention of parties interested, to the ad
vertisement in to-day’s Banner, in ref
erence to the payment of special taxes.
It is important that prompt payment
should be made, for in the event of ne
glect, the penalties prescribed by law
will be enforced without respect to per
sons. Col. E. C. Wade, of Quitman, is
the Deputy Collector for this portion of
the District, and is prepared to furnish
the required stamps to all who make ap
plication.
Peters’ Musical Monthly, for Jiuie,
is fully equal to its predecessors. It con
tains ten pieces of new music, which re
tail, in sheet-form, at 53.65, but is fur
nished to the subscribers of this valua
ble monthly at only thirty cents —or §3.00
per year. It is decidedly the best publi
cation of the character issued from the
press of this country, and no family
should be without it. Mr. Peters will,
for §I.OO, forward the last six months’
numbers of his monthly to any one de
sirous of receiving them. Address J. L.
Peters, 599 Broadway, New York.

The “Rural Carolinian” for June,
comes to us with its usual regularity, its
pages teeming with well selected matter
of more than ordinary interest to agri
culturists. The publishers seem deter
mined to fully maintain its justly earned
reputation as a first class agricultural
publication, and are deserving of success
for their praiseworthy efforts in their
laudable undertaking, which not only
conduces to individual success, but aids
materially in the development of our re
sources and wealth as a nation. No
planter or farmer should be without the
“Rural Carolinian,” if he desires success
in his vocation. The terms are reason
able, being only $2 per annum for single
subscriptions, with liberal inducements
for clubs.
New Patent Chcrn.— I The attention of the
public is invited to anew and wonderful Churn,
invented by the undersigned. It excels anything
ever presented to the public. Cali and see it.

Town Council. —The regular monthly
meeting of this body took place on last
Monday evening. Portions of its delib
erations, to which we refer elsewhere, are
of a very important character, and will
meet with endorsement from a large ma
jority of the people interested. In our
opinion the present Board is a very effi
cient body, and labors faithfully for the
best interests of the town. #
A COMPLETE line of Hardware at
PAINE t HALL’S
Fresli Meat Market.
We are glad to note the fact that the
town Council, at its meeting on Monday
evening, appointed a committee to draft
an Ordinance establishing a market, and
governing the retailing of beef and oth
er fresh meats within the incorporate
limits. This is a matter which has here
tofore been neglected by our town au
thorities, and one in which our people
are very much interested. Until there
is some action had on the part of the au
thorities, forbidding the promiscuous
selling of beef upon the streets, and pro
tecting someone who will make a spe
cialty of the business and be required to
supply the market at stated periods, the
time will never be when our citizens can
rely upon a regular supply of fresh
meats for the table. As the market is
now conducted, we are sometimes with
out fresh meats for weeks at a time; and
then again, at times the supply is great
er than the demand.
We trust that our “city fathers” will
devise some plan by which a market can
be protected from the intrusions of oc
casional vendors of meats, until a certain
hour of the day, say ten o’clock; and be
sides they can thereby create an addi
tional revenue to the town treasury in
the way of license.
Mr. B. H. Gandy lias, for the past two
or three years, been trying to keep up a
beef market, but, for the reasons cited
above, lie has been unable to maintain
any regularity, and by the frequent in
trusion of carts from the country, ho
necessarily has had to sustain great loss.
We are satisfied that Mr. Gandy would
cheerfully accede to any reasonable re
quirements proposed by the town au
thorities for a regular supply of beef and
other fresh meats; and as he is an expe
rienced butcher and already partially
prepared to properly conduct the busi
ness, and a gentleman deserving the pat
ronage of this community, we would be
glad to see the Council make a law pro
tecting him from intrusion, — provided,
of course, that he pays a license for the
privilege and protection extended. *

Honey Extracting. —On last Tuesday
we witnessed the process of extracting
honey from the comb, by the “Atkinson
Honey Extractor,” at the residence of
Mr. James Harris, in Quitman, and were
considerably surprised at the wonderful
process. The gum was new and not,
completed, but from only seven frames,
partially filled, five pounds of beautiful
honey was procured. We are satisfied
that with one of “Atkinson’s Patent Bee
Hives” and “Honey Extractor,” when
the frames are all filled, a person can se
cure daily from six to eight pou, of
honey. Mr. Harris has purchased the
exclusive’right to use and sell the Atkin
son patent in fifteen counties of Alaba
ma. Mr. Irvine has the exclusive right
for Georgia and East Florida.

of iron fronts for stores and dwellings,

Dog Tax. —The Treasurer of the Coun
cil has been instructed, as we understand
it, to include all dogs in bis assessment
of the taxable property of Quitman; or
rather, to ascertain how many dogs there
are in town and whether the people are
willing to pay a tax upon them. Why
not use your authority, gentlemen, and
say all dogs within the incorporate lim
its shall be taxed, say five dollars each ?
It would afford an immense revenue to
the Treasury, and save us many a wake
ful hour caused by the howling and
barking of the innumerable vagrant ca
nine that infest the town *
