President Wei* h, of the lowa State
AgricuUnral College, one of the most i-fli
ei/'ntlristitutions iii the whole country,
and located in a State which has had
more experience with the Granges than
any other, recently aihbessed the I’at.roni
of Husbandry as follows :
Our bond of union is she congeniality
of like jiursuits. The leading purpose
of tho Farmers’ College and the Farmers’
Grange, though gained through different
paths, are largely the same. Tin-Grange
seeks to aid the .farmer by multiplying
his nonius of intelligence, by giving him
the mastery of all the 1 letter method*
ami pJoeessesH of the farm, by quicken
ing, intensifying and elevating all the
better elements of his social life. The
Grunge would secure the fanner against
the torpidity of solit ode and the extor
tions of monopoly; would kindle up in his
breast a steadier zeal and a steadier cour
age; would touch all the bailors of his
hands with the glow of enthusiasm; and,
in short, would do for him what skillful
ly organized efforts has already done for
every other great human industry on the
round earth. All this the Grange aims
to do by means which are most, immedi
ate and direct. All this also the Farm
ers’ College strives to do by another meth
od; by giving a knowledge to audios will
seek it, of all those practical sciences that
underlie she processes of agriculture; by
training and sending forth men who may
become, as the years jiosh, the leaders in
tho grand movement, which the Grange
has inaugurated. It is in harmony wilh
this noble purpose that the College, in
stead of draining the rural districts of
their most promising youths and gradu
ating them to swell the over-crowded
ranks of the law, or to wander in perpet
ual search of a vacant pulpit, sends back
the farmer’s son to the farm, so educated
that lie revitalize all its operations, arid
give them anew and enduring interest.
Such iu-e tho In-nign objects which these
two great enterprises are organized to
further. A ml, mark you, each seeks to
accomplish its aims by combined effoit
the College, on a closer ami more concen
trated plan; the Grange, on a wider and
grander scale. And what effort of man
for the attainment of good, or for defense
against evil, has ever reached its final
triumph, since tho world began, without
combined effort ? What progress, mor
al, social or industrial, was ever achieved
without combined effort ? Combination
is, in fact, the great instrument of pro
gress. Civilization would relapse into
barbarism without it. * * *
And who shall daro say, in the face of
all this marvelous advancement, this vast
accumulation of the results of hard think
ing, this imperative demand for skill and
experience, mid judgment and common
sense, that farming is a dull, stupid,
humdrum business; that only
humdrum people should engage in it;
that the brightest boy of the farmer’s
family must be unfitted for the farm by
sending him to College to learn the dead
languages, or crowned with a stove-pipe
hat and dispatched to the city to engage
in the more exalted (?) employment of
selling needles, and buttons; and tape?—

A beggar asked for a piece of bread
and butter at a house tlie other, day, and
on a coiiple of slices being brought to

the matter?” asked the donor; “isn’t this

enough,” said the beggar- “Well, isn’t
the butter good too/” “Yes, I’ve no
fault to find with the butter.” “Well,
then, what is the matter®’ “I don’t, like
the way it’s spread on,” grow led the fas
