Primitive Baptist Church >
On last Monday morning Mr. J. H
Creech was engaged in the circulation of
a subscription paper, to raise sufficient
funds for the construction of a Primitive
Baptist Church in the town of Quitman
The citizens subscribed quite liberally,
and several hundred dollars were r- d
ized. The church, we presume, will be
built, and will be a great convenience to
a large number of citizens residing in the
town and vicinity, who are of that religi
ous persuasion.
..
Hoad if OrL,
Read the official order from Judge
Harden in to-day's Bannru. The laws
require that he should see thu* the pub
lic roads of the county are kept in good
oondition, and that the Road Commis
sioners fully discharge their duty. The
Judge is positive and determined, and
will proceed against every official who is
gttilty of neglect, in the discharge of iiu
poftarit trusts. He is specially desirous
that the roads in this county shall be
safe and comfortable, and if within his
power to make them so, the work will be
done immediately. Road Commissioner.-:
Will do well to heed this official mandate.
Millinerami Dress Mah'iny.
Mas. Bi.ack is one of the most indus
trious, energetic, persev.-ring, and"deser
ving ladies in ftiis community. She may
be found in her millinery anddn mak
ing establishment et the dawn of day and
until twelve at night, busy plying the
needle, and arranging beautiful dresses
and lovely bonnets for brides and beau
ties in every portion of the county. In
fact, but few weddings are complete, in
this locality, unless the the bride
has l>een arranged by Mrs. Bi o k. for
her good taste and judgment in such
matters are proverbial. She is constant
ly ieceiving snpplic s from Ball in.ore and
Savannah, and ladies in need of a dress,
made up in the latest style, or bonnet
of the most approved fashion, can 1-e ac
commodated at short notice.
Cine Shto/ciny Tobacco.
Mr. Nathan Gazan has in store a fine
lot of the genuine Durham smoking to
bacco, and is selling tin same at seventy
five cents per pound. This is unusually
low, as is also everything else at the
Quitman Cheap Cash Store.
A Large ColT.aed. We have had al
most every description of vegetables sent
to this office during the present season,
and Mr. John Holwell, of Grooverville,
presents the lost, in the form of a mon
ster collar, measuring over four feet in
heightb. and five, feet across the top. It
is the largest we have ever
Fourth of July in Brooks.
We learn that the colored people re
siding in the upper portion of this coun
ty, will celebrate the Fourth of July hv
an immense barbaette, to be furnished on
the plantation of Col. P. Sheffield. No
doubt the darkies will have a good time,
provided they do not take aboard too
much “spent*” to make the day “go-lo
riotfs.”
Chanffe of Schedule.
We invite attention to the change of
schedule in the running of trains on the
Atlantic and Gulf Railroad, as published
in to-day’s Banner. The accommoda
tion (or freight) train will only make
three trips a week, (instead of daily as
heretofore), arriving at Quitman from
Savannah on Tuesday, Thursday and
Saturday mornings, and leave this depot
for Savannah, on Monday, Wednesday
and Friday evenings. The schedule for
the passenger train is more favorable for
the people of this section : the eastern
bound train leaves this depot at 9 o’clock
in the evening, and reaches Savannah at
8:20, A. M.; returning it arrive* here at
4 o’clock, A. M. A sleeping car is at
tached to the daily through trains from
Savannah to Thomasville; and close con
nections are now made with the Honda
roads at Lawton and Live Oak.

Judge A. Morrison, an intelligent
j planter in the Morvin District of this
county, says that the use of Sheep in the
cotton field, where the rains have been
so excessive as to prevent the destruction
of grass, will be found beneficial. He
has seen the experiment, and it works
well. The sheep must not be turned in
to Ihe field whilst hungry, for in such
event they will destroy everything they
come in contact with. First allay the
cravings of hunger, and you may turn
the sheep Upon the cotton with perfect
safety. They will eat the grass alid not
touch a leaf of cotton. We would ad
vise our planters, who are unable to des
troy the grass in their cotton fields by
; manuel labor, to try the suggestion of
! Judge Morrison.
School Affrayi
| On last Thursday evening two young
men, attending Mr. A. J. Sparks’ school
jin Quitman, indulged in a playful dis
j pute, but one of thelii became vexed, and
cut his opponent with a knife. The
wound was painful, but uot of a serious
character, and we are happy to learn
that it is rapidly healing. Young A
inerica,'’ who used the knife,’ 1 deeply re
grets the occtlrrailee, and we feel san
guine will eu leaver to curb his temper
in the future.

Mr. R. C. Mclntosh requests us to j
say that parties will be supplied with
ice on Sunday mornings up to the hour
of 9 o’clock, and not afterwards. Call
at the rear door Postoffice entrance.
The Baptist Church.
Editor Banner: The query pro
pounded through the columns of your
paper, has not yet been answered, and
does not seem to hasten the completion
of the Church steeple. Asa reader of
the Banner, and an interested party, I
have looked in vain for "the reason why.”
Surely it is uot to the credit of the thriv
ing little village. or to the Baptist de
nomination, and especially to the mana
ger of the work, for it to stand there half
finished, and going to ruin. Why, dur
ing one of the recent heavy rains, the
church was wet halfway to the pulpit,
Now, nry proposition is, if the present
manager cannot prevail on his debtor to
complete the work, and cannot find any
one else who will, to let it change hands,
and he given to someone who will have
|it completed immediately. Tin true it.
i will not (to judge from its present looks,)
; be very oi'tiii mental, or lie able to resist a j
j hard wind, but why let it remain as it is'r j
i Better repairing were never undertaken, j
| I hope the Baptists will consider the mat-
I ter and have the work completed,
Respectfully, A Baptlst. I
