We publish elsewhere to-day the ad vertisement of the Ladies’ Memorial As sociation of Brooks County, announcing that they will give a festival on Friday evening, the 3d of October, in the hall over the store of Mi. 11. H. Kuyton, in Quitman. As the ladies composing iao Memorial Associat'd! have been at work in our community for some time, aud their body has red ally beeu made a eharteied organ;'/;,.tun, the gnot object they have in view is well known to our people, and to insure success to tncir en terprise it is only net -cry to slate when and where their Fcst -val will be In M. The ladies hope to realise from this, tbeir th’rd eQtevtainmeat, a siiflifeiit amount to jf- :’v t • iui mabate eom meueement of enelos ng the t etnetciy together with the adjonuug lots who h thev have j.uvehased for burial pm p" -■ and we trust tbeir i iTotts and coni nun: labors may meet w th the success they justly merit. Let ou • citizens th’-ik of the present neglecie 1 coi’diliou of our cemetery, of the loved ones whose re mains they have deposited there, of the “Fallen Heroes” there interred, and con fided to the ; r care during the late war, and on Friday evening, the 3d of Octo ber, go and partsL c liPenally of the lad -s seas i. Xew Hoods. The attention of our readers is direct ed to the advertisement, to be found in another column, of Mr. Jacob Baum, who ha; recently returned from New Yo.k w : th the most complete and extensive stock of goods he has purchased s’nce the war, He info ms us that be inteuds to offer bis goods at such remark ably low prices as to induce buyeis, and as he is a merchant of experience, and made his purebas s in person, we have no doubt good bargains can be bad at bis store. Briggs, ./elks <1 Cos. 'The reader wall not fail to notice the advertisement of these gentlemen in to day’s Banner. They have received their Fall and Winter stock, which is very large and consists principally of Dry Goods, Ladies’ and Gentlemens’ Dress Goods, Boots and Shoes, Hats and Caps, ! Family Groceries, Ac. They offer extra- I ordinary inducements to the* ladies, in the I line of hats, trimmings and dress goods, j and those in need of such articles .will do j well to call and examine their stock; before making their purchases else where. This is exclusively a cash house,; and their motto is, “Quick sales and small j profits.” Mr. H. F. Mabbett, who i3 the I business man of the film, is a merchant ■ of long experience, and as he spent sev- i eral weeks at the North in selecting their goods, availed himse'f of many advauta- ; ges which he can extend to ids custom ers. 11 JI Kan ton Has returned to Quitman, and is now opening at his former stand a large stock of goods, which will he advertised in next j week’s Banner. The Debt of Brooks County. The Monroe Advertiser, usually a very reliable and interesting paper, savs in the issue of last week that “Brooks coun ty has a debt of 344,247.” Where the editor got his information we cannot imagine, for his statement is very far from correct. The Judge of the County Court reports the debt only about $5,200, most of which is on bonds, one half of which bonus are due January Ist. 1874, and the other half January Ist, 1875. Under the judicious management of Judge Harden the financial condition of our county is in a very hopeful condition. Were lie to levy on the present State Taxes the amount which many of other county authorities impose, he could pay every dollar of debt this w inter, but as the claims against the county are in such | a condition as to l>e entirely manageable, he has concluded to levy only fifty per cent, on the State Tax for county pur i poses. This he thinks will pay the ooun | ty out of debt in two years, and not be | oppressive on any of our citizens. We ; have seen reports from only some 8 or 10 I counties this fall, but in none of them is I the county tax loss than one hundred per cent, ou the State Tax, end in some of them it is eonsideiably larger than that. Council O. Mot/c. We were glad to meet, during the preset, week, aud welcome as a cilia.-n of Quitman agabi, our clever and jovial young friend whose name is at the heal iof this article. Most of our citizens will remember that Council has been a resi dent in our midst before, and was a clerk and book keeper here for two or three years after the late war, when, all of a sudden, he became infatuated with one of the fair daughters of the “Land of Flow ers.”,was married, and went u> farming in Madison county, near the Georgia line. ; Council is Well known and has many friends in tins and adjoining counties, i and it affords us pleasure to inform them S that, ho has engaged as eh rk for Mr. ! Nathan Gazan, where he will be pleased | to see them at any time. We call the attention of tlie Pat rons of Husbandry to the notice of Mr. I J. T. Perdue, the Master of the Quit nau j Grange, published in this issue. It will i lie agoodopport unity for those desiring to i organize Subordinate Granges before the Fires ’on Pfiu.io “Bidnots.
