♦ W. IE HENXEi\ Editor. 11. M. McINTOSH, Associate THBBSDAY, BEPTILTBEIi 25, 1873. Jlrooks (' nmfy -- Its Oryantsatlvn and (Jeoyeajifiy. Brooks County was formed out of the toe it of Thomas ansi Lowndesr-by an Ujjit of the Legislature, approved Decern- Ivi* llt.b, 1853. J?v the terms of that the county was included in the fol - low::);' limits, to wit: B •"’iin V'ct the Florida, line where th • WitbloocoOchee river enters said State, and running bj> sod river, to the junction of the saiJ Withloocoochee with Little river to the Hue between lota of land Number iifty-irm* and sixty, in the twelfth tail 1 distrtet of Lowndes county; them e ruualn ' to the south-west, comer of lot of lan 1 Number thirty-five in the twelfth hue] district of said county of Lown lc«. and thence running flue north to the county Hu • between Lowndi sand Berrien. Then *e running the lino be tween s.ihl couuti.-s of Lowndes and Ber rien to tie; line of Colquitt county. Thence running the line between Lownd* a and Colquitt and Thomas ari l Colquitt to the line dividing lots of land Numbers three hundred and ninety-two and four hundred and tirirtv-to von in Thomas. Theio’e die- south to the Oeilla river, end thenee running down the O*: lla river to the Florida line, and thenee running the line between Lowndes and the State of Florida to the entrance of Withloocoo oliee river into said State of Florida (the starting point.) By a subsequent, act of the. Legislature approved No vein bid- 21st, 1859, all that, portion of Brooks east, of Little river, ex erpt, lot IX o. 178, In the 12th district, was transferred to Lowndes county. The eastern boundary is of course irregular on account of the crooks in tins Withloo cooeheo and Lit tie rivers, but wo suppose the county would average about tiventy sevui miles iu length, from North to South, and about S'-veuteen ni’h's in breadth, from Fast to West, and contains about throe hundred and thirty-five thou sand acres of land. The county was named after the Hon. I'rest On 8, Brooks, u member of Congress fiom I'outh Carobna, end. I lie county site after (b n. John A. Quitman, a member of Congress from the State of Manssip pi, both of whom were strong State rights men, and warn) friends of the South. The principal streams of Brooks coun ty are tic Withloocoochee and Little riv ers, on its eastern boundary the Aucilla forming a part, of it m western line, and the Ociipil eo, Pisco’ a, und Mule creeks, running into the interior. Besides these there arc several smaller creeks and nu merous branches, many of which keep running during the whole year, so that it might be very properly considered, a well watered country. The face of the count ry is generally undulating, presenting neither the tno notinuus "(ii*,S level” of some of the counties farther cast,, nor the broken op pearauee of the hi'ls of Middle Georgia. We might mention as sumo of the nat nnil curiosities appertaining to the geog raphy of the county, the oxistenee of a lake known as Dry bake, some ten miles North west, of Quitman, that occasional ly (say every four or live years) runs ofl under ground, nml becomes entirely dry. There is also Bowen Mill creek, sonn three miles from Quit man, that empties into a deep sink, and appears no more upon the surface. In a very ivet. time, when there is more water than .can pass oil through (he opening iu the sink, it runs over, and forms a branch below, but in ordinary times, below and around the sink, is perfectly dry, and it is frequently 10 or 15 feet to the water in the sink, thus forming a considerable fall for the mill creek at that place, in the eastern part of the county, near Little liver, there is a beautiful spring, called the Blue Spring, that chords delightful bathing facilities and is a place of considerable re sort for our citizens during the summer months. Vbe water of this Spring Is supposed te contain some mineral prop erties, podiaps mostly linfcstone, with traces of magnesia. In the bed of the river at. this point but nearortho Lowndes county side, i« a strong sulphur spring, which would doubtk-ss be valuable, if it were diffea ntiv located; Lot unfortunate ly it is cnlv acoessable at low stages oi the river. Both of these springs are near the Sal It cad bridge over the Withloocoo chee. The Atlantic and Gulf Railroad runs through the county from east to west, a fo\v miles below the center, the hue of the read cntving a little towards the South. C-n this K: ilroad the comity site, Quitman, is United. There is also one other cUi ot in the county, about sev en r.'.l .twest ofQuitman, known as Dixie, ,iuri sometimes called "Groover Station.'’ Th» Xcir lor A Times tind tin firitn- Wv see th: ; the New York Thins*, the lending radical pa] • r of the North, is .• ••nrideraley oxeivised oh account of the i... .ess of the. As long r.s it is actuated by these principles, it must provoke the hostility <*f the Ka Feal party, a pirty that Ims practiced fraud of aim* - t every i ud« from th*- huge swindle of the petty thtov- j ing of some of its Stab’ officials. IV cl congratulate the Patrons on the opposi-1 lion of such a Sheet as the New York | Tinn’s. Had that, paper commended them, it would have been a suspicious j circumstance. We might have been afraid , either that there was something wrong 1 iu Iho order, or that the Time* hoped, by . bribery and flattery, to control them, and j direct them from their purpose of refpnn j to the support of the Radical party. Is three, no Hi inrdy Mr. Kiutor: Mrs. Hannah Moore,! may have been gifted with “prophetic ken" j when, in the “long ago,” she sang that I “Idle in no round of jocund hours, Ofgftrtnmlsirsy iin*l festive bowers.” But whether this sentiment wiui the i offspring of her own experience, the his-, tory of others from observation, or ■ glim].see of the future, it matters not. ■Suffice it, the “talc is o’er tru and to d ly wc of this county are reaping its ver ification in full measure “heaped up and i running over. With the experience of the past few months, and the storm now raging, how very many of us v ill echo this wail from i their inmost nouri! Our people contracted ; largely for fertilizers at the beginning of the present year, they have* gone into debt for provisions with which to feed j employees; they have planted largely ; with tbo expectation of “reaping bounti fully;” they have b * n visited with the boll worm and caterpillar, nnduowivmes t his howling storm of wind and rain, that will beet the staple from the bolls, depre ciate (he value of Kiii'li as uiay be gath ered from the dirt, to further blast their ho pi s, and nip theirexjieetations. True j 1 am at prcuuit sheltered from the pelt-j ing of (he storm, but lean sec with my j j mind's eye, our fanners nnd our mcr i eliuuts, wearing most rueful file*’*, tha< I speak volumes of disappointment, and | huiidliafion. With the measurably cutting off of tlu; pregr nt m p of cotton go down many dreams of relief from already accumula ted ill, nnd east the shadows of future and heavier burthens. Let each firmer in Brooks county bal ance his accounts for the present year, and ! venture the assertion that not many of them will have a dollar with which to biiv him ft ehristnms dinner, while by far the larger per cent.oi them will be behind hand. This is. a glccwy picture, end 1 intend it as null, nor do I think it is over drawn, but a fair, unvarnished statement, of facts. My object, in speaking thus plainly is to cull the attention of our peo ple tot liotr true condition, for not until they are fully awakened to it, etui they be brought to act for t heir own interest. But you ask, “is there no remedy ?” I answer, yes, and mine isno line spir.i the ory. T ]iropose to give the eondit on oi Northern Georgia, in the summer of 1805; also that of thisthe n more highly favor ed section, at the same time, and suffer you to draw yi ur own conclusion. From the stern logic of facts, there can bo no appeal they aryi incontrovertible. It is a matter of history, written not only by the chronicler of events, but scar ed ns with a hot iron into the very hearts j of the people of North Georgia, that | when the war was closed, when Lee and I Johnson surrendered their armies, tins section of our State wax desolate. Black. • died and charred were by far tin* gn liter part of their residences. Houseless and homeless the returning soldiers found themselves. Gloomily “Sherman's sen tinels,” stood marking the spot where once was seen tluir cottages and their mansions. Defeated, dispirited and de jected they returned tinmpty lardersand ; apparent starvation, Blit, did they do- j spoil* 7 To their lasting credit be it her alded to the world, they did not. Sub-i (listing upon berries, bread and perhaps with an occasional treat of Sorghum syr-; up, with little or no stock, they began! with their hands only, to repair their j ruined fortunes. Living within their j scanty means, they laid the corner stone i for their future weal or woe. '1 o day there scares!)*a hamlet in that theude - titute section where “pence and plenty" docs in*! “crown the board." They plant- ' ed a sufficiency for the requirements of home, and if they harvested more than ; v net dt>d for home consumption, it ivus , sold and with the proceeds they made , Ul !j purchases as were indispensililo. j Hv ties means they contracted frugal habits, and “<w tnr usaiali'rvi, the cash sys- . teni. The result is, they are to-day pros perous and happy. South Georgia, on the other hand, had | felt nothing of these ills, except the hu- I miliation of* defeat, and the treeing of; the negroes. Cotton, commanding high figures, belonged to most of our eitir.cns. ' Monev nnd provisions were plentiful. Habits of extravagance were naturally begotten. The belief that large fortunes I were in reach of ail cotton planters, lured i many into most extravagant investments. I Our poopT “run wild” in their haste to j he rich. The unreliability of the laboring ! ; class, and disasters to the cotton crops, have drank up our means, and placed us j in no enviable condition. Me are near | i n g the point where our friends of North < Geoagia started at the close of the war. j The irresistible* conclusion is, that we must adopt the course they pursued, if a,* expect to throw off the shaikhs that I now bind us. F* Letter From lioston. . Editor Banner: —We were visited last Friday with one of the most violent storms ever seen iu this country. Itcom rnenced blowing early in the morning, the wind N. E. gradually increasing in violence, until about 10 o’clock, a. m., • then it shifted to the E., when, with the j fury of a gale, it began its work in earn- j est. uprooting trees, sweeping fences, and throwing some old houses. Ju.-t In for. 11; a. xt., the wind changed , to the B. H., and lor 80 or 40 minutes it, : blew a perfeit hurricane, assuming the j eharaeteristies of one twisting the trees i off. Just then your cot respondent got seared, dud don’t remember much more of the particulars, only that about night it calmed down, the Sun siting fair. The new Baptist meeting house dedi cated the 2nd Babhat h in this month, is down ; the top blown off the Methodist church; themiil of Messrs.
