The Iflfrofa Metfiodhd Clergyman
in the Subject of a Miraculous f’is
itation.
Great excitement. ha-i been created in
Xew H uiijisbire by an awteuat given by
Mrs. Ellen C. Sherman, wife of the l£ev.
Moses Sherman, of Pierpent, of her hav
ing been rescued from the brink of the
grave by Divine ini-erfioaition. Mrs.
Sherman is a woman of thirty-five, of fair
education and strong religious convic
tions. Her reputation for integrity has
always been unquestionable, aud her re
markable story has naturally given rise
to animated discussion among those who
were familiar with the faets in her ease.
It appears to be admitted on all sides
that Mrs. Sherman, just before the time
of the alleged miracle, was inanextreme.
Iv dangerous condition. She was scarce
ly able to lift her hand to her mouth, and
this incapacity for action was accompan
ied with intense pain, which at times was
so severe as to render her delirious. Then
came a sudden and remarkable change
without apparent can ,0, and a rapid pro
gress toward complete restoration to
health. Iu the community where' Mrs.
.-iiorman lives the opinions upon the na
ture of her sudden convalescence are va
rious, and evidently influenced by secta
rian bias. It. is said that the Methodist
, r-neraily accept her mvount 114 salisfae
i.ory evidence of miraculous interposition,
while other sects are skeptical, nmi at
trlbuting her convalesce ueu to natural
causes, ascribe her L< lief in a mi|icrna*u
ral visitation to the diaorcb red fancies of
brain excited to the highest degree of
, ligious fervor and pin siealagony. Here
is Mrs. Bherman’s story :
