People's friend. February 1, 1873, Image 1

Captain A. B. S. Moseley published the first issue of People’s Friend on January 11, 1873 in Rome, Georgia. The paper served as the official state organ for the Independent Order of Good Templars, a national temperance organization, and it circulated every Saturday at a subscription cost of two dollars. Moseley’s wife, Margie P. Moseley, and Reverend L. R. Gwaltney managed the publication’s editorial department. The People’s Friend ceased publication the same year as its founding, although A. B. S. Moseley spent the rest of his life in Rome and published other papers, including the Rome Bulletin.
