Death of J. W. Jones Esq.
'hie Chronicle <£• Sentinel came to us on
Saturday draped in deopeat mourning
which cast a shadow of melancholly ov-
ter our soul. We found that it mourn
ed the death of J. W. Jones Esq., who
"for twenty years had been its editor.—
lie died about 1 o’clock on Friday night
of pneumonia, of which he had been ill
for some time. Any eulogy that we.
might prepare would not add anything
to tiie distinguished reputation he ' had
gained in his profession, nor soothe in
the least the universal sorrow. We are
but stating truths well known when we
say that the reading publio have lost
one of their best aiid most successful
contributors to their enjoyment, tho po
litical party of which he was tile "news
paper leader an able and faithful cham
pion, the editorial fraternity a courte
ous brother and an ornament to their
profession, tho community in which lie
lived a most.zealous guardian and advo
cate of its interests, and his numerous
friends a warm heart and a true
friend. Tiie domestic relations he had
recently assumed were of short duration
nnd too sacred for publio comment. Our
deepest sympathies are aroused by this
sad beroavement.

Free Negroes in Massachusetts.-Wc
notice a few days since that Gov. Banks,
of Massachusetts, had vetoed a bill which
had passed the Legislature of that State
admitting negroes-to bo enrolled among
tho white men of that State, in the Mili
tia. The bill had been passed by a strict
party vote—the little band of Democrats
fighting desperately against it. Upon
being re-considered with the Governors’
objections, however,the veto was sustain-
edby a vote of 146 to 34. Tho ground
taken by Governor Banks was: That the
Federal Constitution excluded the idea
of negro equality, and decided that per
sons of African descent were not proper
ly “citizens,” nnd ho coroborated his
opinion by. decisions of the Supremo
court of Massachusetts, and tiie Attor
ney General,—Montgomery Confederation.

God of the founders and framers of this
Republic, that lie would moreifully in

save our beloved country from tho an
archy and con fusion that now threaten
us, nnd that they will read his card to
their congregations, and request them

An Anti-Helper Book.—A young

from their writings and spoeehos to

THE PECULIARITIES or the female
constitution and tho various trials to which
the sex iB subjected, demand an occasional
recourse to stimulants. It is important, how
ever. that these shall be of a harmless nature
and at the same time accomplish the desired
end. Hostotter's Celebrated Stomach Ritters
is thovery article. Its effects in all ensos of
debility aro almost magical. It restores tho
tone of tho digestive organs, infuses fresh
vitality into the whole system, and gives
that cheerfulness to the temperament, which
is tho most valuable of the fominino attrac
tions. The proprietors feel flattered from tho
fact many! of the most prominent medical
gentlemen in the Union have bestowed en-
coniutus upon the Ritters, the virtues of which
they have frequently tested and acknowledg
ed. There nro numerous counterfeits offered
for sale, all of which uro destitute of morit,
and positively injurious to tho system.

of the present excited state of the country
deem it proper to bring to tho notico of the
interior Merchants the claims we have to
their patronage and custom. Tho majority
of us have been long established in business,
and from our experience are well acquain
ted with the wants of this section of country
All of us hold sentiments in common on the
agitating question of the day—slavery; and
all of us desire, as far as practicable, to be-
commercially, independent of tho North'.—
have no desire to underrate the energy and
enterprise of tho Merchants of Northern
cities, but we claim to be able to supply goods
in our respective lin.-s, on as favorauie terms
both as to price and credit, as the merchants
of any city, in the Union. Wehave facilities
for obtaining goods Crum Europe,. not sur
passed by any, nnd our importations from
abroad are'very large, notwithstanding the
reports, tq the contrary, circulated by those
who have no knowledge of what they affirm
or whose interests prompt them to mislead.
American goods we obtain from the manu
factures ou us favorable terms as any Job
bing Merchants of tho Northern cities. Why
then should wo v.ot be able to sell on as fa-
Torable terms as othors ?
We are able and determined to do so, and
all we ask of you is. to try this market, lay
aside tho prejudice—for it is only prejudice
—that your customers prefer goods .from
Now York for those from Charleston, and
build U|i and encourage your own Seaports
and yohr own Merchants. If we cannot do
what wo profess, you will bo subjected to a
very little incouvouience. for opportunities
of leaving hy railway or st.-araer are offered
every twelve hours.
Our Stocks will bo completoby 1st Febru
ary next, and it remains to be soon how
many of tlioso who have heretofore pur
chased all their goods in northern cities will
givo Charleston a trial this spring.
