f rii tlYo .fetid of night, and an old imn stands
At e, aimed gate, with uplifted binds,
And the teag.drops free to on his sunken
cheeks,
As vrtfh quivering, feeble vaiea lie spenks j
And tell* to,tho night, in saddened tone,
Of tfunghine fled, and of pleasure gone.
“O op6'the gate, for the night is cold—
Mv pulse is week and mv liinhs are old;
Afar Ftref wandered, and snd Imre been
The' fights which my weeping eyes have
seen!
Oh angel open—I fain would rest
My weary (lead on the Past’s soil breast.
. 'fUnbnr the gpte, for the hour is nigh _
’ for a year to he born, nod for me to die.
My feet lire sore, and I wearied come;
O open the gnte, and take in; home !
I’ve wandered far,-since a year ago,
A babe 1 was cradled in iecand snow.
"Bright shone tho morn, ns I laughed in g'ec
At tils glorious future that waited me—
But all is post—here I most stand
At tliegute of Time, with uplifted hand.
0 angel, list—for my failing breath
Asks peace, repose, in the rest of death.”
Eleven strokes from the clock lmd (odd
That the year was weary, worn and old—
An hour, and tlrcr pealingI'rrftoes flew
T<s tell the ynfr was young snd new.
Tho angel had heard, and unbarred the door,
And the old mnn resteth forevermore!
A Startling Occchrexc*.—A lady who
had returned from India threo years ago
was the other day opening a drawer in
what is termed a bullock trunk. To
her untazomont and horror* snake roar
ed up its head; her first impulse was to
push the drawer to, but it was stiff and
heavy. She ran screaming down stairs
for help. Her brother, who was in the
drawing room, went to her assistance,
and preceded her again up stairs. The
snuke was not to be seen, and the gen
tleman thought it must have been his
sister’s imagination; no, lifter some lit
tle time, the search'was given up, Tho
following morning a canary that always
hung in the lady’s room was missing,
in looking Jnt« the cage tho snake lay
curled up at tho bottom of it, and all
that remained of the bird by his side.
Tliero was no difficulty in destroying the
snake, and it was discovered to bo whet
is termed the green snako, whose
nature is to make a spiing at the eve,
when death immediately ensues. The
marvel is how the roptile livod so long
and the lady escaped.—-London Court
Journal.

■' HOSTETTER’S
STOMACH BltTERS,
Ibr the cure of Dyspepsia, Indigestion, Kausea,
Flatulency, Loss of Appetite, or any Dillons
Complaints, arising from a morltia inaction
of the Stomach or Dowels, producing Cramps.
Dysentery, Colic, Cholera Jforbus, cfcv.
In view of the fact that every member of
the human family is more or less subjected to
•oino of the above coin plaints, besides in
numerable other conditions in life, which
by the assistance of a little knowledge or
exercise of common sense, they may be able
so to reflate their habits of diet, and with
the assistance of a good tonic, secure per
manent health. In order to accomplish this
desired object, the true course to pursuo is,
certainly, that which will produce a natural
state of things at the least hazard of vital
strength and life ; for this end Dr. Hostetter
has introduced to this countiy a prepara
tion called HOSTETTER’S ST6maCH
BITTERS, which at this day is n* s new
medicine, but one $at has been tried for
years, giving satisfaction to all who havo
used it. The Bitters operate powerfully upon
tho stomach, bowels and liver, restoring
them to a healthy and vigorous aetion, and
thus by the simple process of strengthening
nature, enable the system to triumph over
disease. Diarrhoea, dysentery or flux, so
generally contracted by new settlers, and
caused principally by the change of water
and diet, will bo Bpeedily regulated by a
brief use of this preparation. Dyspepsia,
a disease which is protmbly more prevalent
when taken in all its various forms, than
any other; the cause of which may always
bo attributed to derangements of the diges
tive organs, can bo cured without foil by-
using HOSTETTER’S STOMACH BIT
TERS as per directions on the bottle. For
this disease every physician will recom
mend Bitters of somo kind, then why not
use on article known to be infallible t
Every country have their Bitters as n pre
ventive of disease, and strengthening of
the system in general, and among them all
there is not to bo found a more healthy
people than the Germans, fro.n whom this
preparation emanated, based upon scientific
experiments which has attended to advance
the destiny of this great preparation in tho
medioal scale of science.

This trying and provoking disease, which fixes its
relentless grasp on the body of man, reducing him to
mere shadow in a short space of time, and rendering
