P RIOR TO the had been ma< „ „ burnt bon s with sulphuric acid, and by the formation of aulphato ol'limo, thus abstract ing one atom of iime from the bones, as lu- ble phosphate had been formed. In 1847, J. J. ilapes made a series of experiments, thus: he found, analytically, that Peruvian Guano contained the nccoesary elements for insu. ing th> growth of plants, but not in the ight relative proportions to each other. He instituted a series of experiments, practical ly. by which' he proved that one hundred pounds of burnt bones, treated with fi t;, six pounds of sulphuric acid, thirty-six pounds of Peruvian Guano, twenty pounds of sul phate of ammonia, tormed a mixture every way superior to Peruvian Guano, and that it would not excite the soil, but would Con tinually add to its fertility. He had Ibund that one barrel of blood, IVcsh from the animal, mixed with u cord of organic matter, would, by fermentation, pro duce a manure equal to a cord of well rotted stable manure. He further ibund that sov- Anteen barrels .of blood, when dried, would make one barrel, and that blood could be procured at compnritmdy little cost, in cer tain sections; that it could bo dried by cook ing and pressing so as tnproduoo a dry pow der, and by adding to the above named in gredients an oqual weight of dried bullock's blood, a manure is formed one hundred pounds of which arc opual in power and lasting ef fect to one hundred and righty-fire pounds of the best Peruvian Guano. Sines he has offered his invention to tho femurs of the country, some filty companies have imitated this article und.r various names and for tho purpose of rendering it papular, have traduced Prof. Mapes and his article, claiming to make that 01 a superior quality. Evvry year presents new imitators of this article, who munu.acturo an in.erior article, using the mineral phospates as a ba sis. instead of the caleiued bones of animals. Notwithstanding all this, the demand for Mapes’ Nitrogunisod Superphosphate of Lime has doubled. Peruvian Guano contains an excessive amount of ammonia, the only use of which is to render water capable of dissolving a larger amount of tho inorganic constituents’ of the soil, or as sometimes called to act as anoxoitant. Tho imirkot gardeners of New Utrecht commenced some years ago by tiling two hundred w> ight of guano t* the acre; tb«y are now compullj.t to uso twelvo hun dred weight of guano lo produce tho samo effect, nuil their land is evidently inipover- ' ued by its use, while those wbo havo used We hope to rooeivo the encouragement of the ettisens generally In this enterprise, and V expect to compensate them in return f n ’*! | I “lo IjcJz By Saving them IN MAKING TBEIR PURCHASES.
