The Mad Poet.
The following reminiscence of Mc
Donald Clarke, is from the pen of the
Pa-
Januory
_ - , .
“One evening, many years ago, I was
walking towards Broadway after busin
ess hours. Tho night promised to be
tempestuous, clopds wer$ gathering in
the sky, suclii as usually gather around
one’s birthday when it happens to bo
March fifth. I was then precisely twen
ty-four years old. I mention the foot
merely to record the date, for momory’s
sake. At the corner of Vesey street
—St. Paul’s corner—around the iron
fence a crowd had collected; and the
centre and attraction of the crowd was
a wild looking crcaturv dressed in a
long, blue Spanish cloak, his head bare,
a his scanty gray hairs dripping with
sleet andrain. It was McDonald Clarke
the mad poet, He waved those long,
thin fingers of his in the air, and in
voked, in strange, rliapsodieul language
the elements that blustered around him
Kven in so heterogeneous an audienoe
there were none but pitying faces.—
Just as J reached the spot, some per
sons endeavored to lead him away. Er-
rybody in the city then was uroqiliar
with his strange vagaries, and therefore
no unusual catastrophe was expeoted.
But that night this peor, mad poet, the
heir of want and scorn, died in
‘Tombs/ * # # # *
In looking over a volume of his
poems ono is struck with occasional
stanzas of rare grace and beauty, even
amid the most incoherent and incon
gruous images and fancies. As the
chief of these linve already been select
ed, and are to be found in the usual
collections of American poetry, I shall
not do more than refer to them here;
but I cannot help reoalling an im
promptu not before in print, I believe,
whicli certainly is ns touohing as any
lines ever written. That eminent ar
tist, Thomas Ilicks, once made a sketch
of poop Clafke. and tho latter, after
gazing at It attentively for some time,
breathed forth, in a voice of tender mel
ancholy; . (1
'No wonder that they coll me mad,
If mine be sucli a mournful fooo,
So very desolate and sad,
So furrowad with affliction's trace.’ “

the bed with him a dead, matt I The
truth flashed upon him immediately;
he bounded from the bed, donned his

the hardness of the bed nor its scanty

Ladies Should Head Newspapers.—
The Albany Times says, it is a great mis
take in female education to keep a
versation you must give her something
to talk about, give her education with
the actual world and transpiring events.
Urge her to read newspapers, and be
come familiar with the present charac
ter and improvement of our race. His
tory is of importance; but the past
world is dead, and we have nothing to
do with. Let her have an intelligent
opinion, ahd be able to sustain intelli
gent conversation concerning the' men
tal, moral and religious improvement
of our times. Let the gilded annuals

Domestic Traoedv.—A man named
Thomas Faulkner, of Halifax .county,
Virginia, who, while intoxicated had a
habit of amusing himself by frighten
ing his wifo, carried his joke a little too
far a font-days since. The Halifax Echo
says:
On this as on previous occasions, he
declared hie intention of hanging him
self. This he hod done before, and bad
tied the rope to the joist and then
around his-neok, always taking care,
however, to have it long enough so that
in stepping from the chair, box or what
ever lie used on the occasion to elevate
himself, be would easily touch the floor.
On this occasion he tied the rope too
short, and when ho stepped from his
elovation instead pf reaching the fl.opr

marks, in an inoredible short space -tiS t
time it has risen from . the .rank of •
tenth-rate town to be the. third city ini:
the world in population and riches.—•
Marble and free stone edifices of great
size, beauty and oostiineet abound; it
has a vast park of 800 acres, which will
be before long in the centre of the city;
and thousands of its dwelling-houses for
exceed in elegance and comfort the .

About Cuicks.—Mr. Camp, President
of tho New Haven Cloak Company, in '
a recent speech at a suppeasaid: •
Clock-making was commenced about
1816, by Elias Terry, of Plymouth, who
made wooden clocks, whittling out the
wheels, with ft knife. The running w$s
regulated by a heavy bag pf sand, and
was wound up by a ball at the other end -
of the cord. Terry used to make two^
movements,” using old kettles, because 1
brass was scarce. When he undertook
to make two hundred clooks, people
laughed at him, they tki«flteig it would .
be impossible to sell them. In 1828
Hon. Chauncy Jerome commenced tha
business, and with progressive improve- i
monts the business now stands more
perfected than any other in the count
