At one time he was in immi nent danger of being roughly treated, and was so badly scared that he was heard to express a preference just then for a climate usually considered much warmer than the tropics. He evident ly thought Rome “too hot” for him. It is a most astonishing thing to us that a Northern limn at this juncture will per mit un anti-slavery opinion to escape Ills lips at the South. Tho New Steamboat Calhoun, intended for running on the Oostanaula River, as launched on Tuesday last. She is Trim-built, and is really a beautiful craft. In style she is somewhat peculiar, yot quite symmetrical—tho bows are half clipper model, stern double arched tran som, combining the qualities of light draft, with tolerable speed, properties rarely attained in the same boat. Tho length on dock is 111 feet, 18 feet beam nnd 23J feot across tho guards. Her capacity is sufficient for carrying two hundred and seventy-five bales of Cot ton. This boat is built by Mr. F. M. Coul ter, the pioneer of light draft-boats on the Coosa, and wo believe that this boat, "^ike the Pennington, will prove to be a proud example of this gentleman's skill and ability in the construction of light draft steamers. The machinery for the Calhoun is the same as was*taken from tho ill fated DiSoto, and it is expected that in less than thirty days she will I e making regular trips to her namesake, the coun- ty-si*e of Gordon county. After tho re moval of a few obstructions, it is be lieved that tho Oostanaula may b.i nav igated all the year round. Wo wish abundant success to the Oostanaula Steamboat company. lion. L. W. Crook. In 1847, J. J. Mapos inadun soriesof experiments, thus lie found, analytically, that Peruvian Guano contained tlio necessary elements for insN ring thu growth of plants, but not in the right relnlive proportions to each other, lie instituted a series of experiments, practical ly. hy which lie prnvc l that one hundred pounds of burnt bones, treated with fifty-six pounds of sulphuric ncid. thirty-six pounds of Peruvian Guano, twenty pounds oT sul phate of ammonia, formed a mixture every way superior to Peruvian Guano, nnd that it would not excito the soil, but would con tinually add to its fertility. Ho hud found that one btrrel of blood, fresh from the unimal, mixed with a cord of organic matter, would, by fermentation, pro duce a manure eqwfil to a cord of well rotted stable manure. Ite further found that sev enteen barrels of blood, when dried, would mako ono barrel, and that blood couhl bo procured at comparitively little cost, in cer tain sections; tlmt it could be dried by cook ing nnd pressing so as to produce a dry pow der, uud by ndding to the abovo mimed in- f redionts ail equal weight of driod bullock's lood, a manure is formed one hundred pounds of which aro cpual in power and lasting ef fect to one hundred and cighty-tivu pounds of the best Peruvian Guano. Sincu ho has offered his invention to the Prices plainly marked in Figurts. For further particulars apply at the Store. jan2—tf Jones, bcott, ombbko- a cxy. TO THE farmers of tho country, some fifty companies have imitated this article under various The Last Warning. J WILL now oucc more request my oM customers to pay up,as I am determined namo*. and for tho purposo of rendering it popular, havo traduced Prof. Mapos and his article, claiming to mako that of a superior quality. Every yenr presents now imitators of this articlo, who manufacture an inferior article, using tho mineral ptiospates as a ba sis. instead of ths calcined bones of animals. Notwithstanding ull this, the demand for Mapos' Nitroveniscd Buperphosphate of Lima has doubled. Peruvian Guuno coutaius an excessive amount of ainmuuia, tlio only uso of which is to rcuder water capuble of dissolving a larger amount of tho inorganic constituents of tho soil, or as sometimes called to act as an excitant. Tlio market gardeners of New Utrecht commenced somo years ago by using two hundred weight of guauo to tho acre; they are now compelled to use twelvo hun dred weight of guauo to produco the samo effect, aud their land is uvidently imjKivcr- ished by its use, while those who havo used tlio Nitrngoui-icd Supcrpbosphnto of Limo, Imre steadily found their soils to bo improv ed, and instead of requiring more, they re quire less fertilising inatorinTeaoh year. And this is particularly truo of Tobacco and Cot ton lands. Among tlio advantages arising from the useol Nitrogeuisod Suporphospbate aro tho following: It curries no weed need to the soil; iC prevents rust, and insures tlio perfect ing of plants; thus, when used on Cntton, tho boils do not fall and. os by tho oxporienoe of Mr. Lomas, Col. Davis, and Col. Goodwin and others, it gives a greater weight p.’r acre »f cotton. Fur Wheat, it has steadily prov ed itself to bo superior to tho Peruvian Gu ano; wheu in contact witli seed, it does not destroy it ns does tire Peruvian Guano; and it supplies tha deficiency of the Phosphate of Luuoand other ingredients, produced bl excessive reaping of grain and uuduc pas- ttfrngo. The reports of the farm of tlio inventor, of the American Institute, and committees of other institutions, wli > have visited it, nltho’ it is manured entirely with this fertiliser, prove that no manure hits yot been usod which produces an equal amount profit. The American Institute havo just awarded their Silver Medal to Professor Mapos, for the bast fertilizer, aller a most thorough invest! gatioi, into tho merits of all in the markot.
