“Paragon Black Hawk.”
The following notice of this horse,
advertiser! in another column, is dipt
from if Northern exchange:
Happening In a few days since, we
recognised among several, the beautiful
Morgan stallion, “Paragon Black Hawk,”
about embarking for the State of Geor
gia. lie is a fine specimen of the justly
oelebrnted Morgan horse, and we con
gratulate the peoplo of that State in the
selection of him for a stock horse. We
refer to him particularly because “we
know whereof we affirm” having seen
him many times at our fairs, where he
has been “the observed of all observers,"
and wo also havo some acquaintance
with liis fine young stock.
He will give to bis patrons abundant
satisfaction and sustain the reputation
attained by the Morgan horse.
The query naturally arises, “How long
shall we continue to raise these superior
horses if we suffer the best to leave us?"
Another Vermont Black Hawk will
never arise, and “Paragon” is one of
the best of his colts.

Davis* Pain Killer.
No mcdicino is more prompt In its action
In caso of Cholera Morbus, Ac., than Perry
Davis’ Pain Killer. It is the acknowledged
antidote which setdem fails if applied in its
early symptoms. No family should be with

The stain on linen from the use of the
Pain Killer is easily removed by washing
it in alcohol.
Davis’ Pain Killer seems particularly, effi
cacious in cholera morbus, bowel complaints,

T>RIOR TO the year 1847, Superphosphate
JL had been made In England, by treating
burnt bones with sulphuric acid, and by the
srnuktion or sulphate Of lima, thus abstract
ing one atom of lime from tho bones, a sola-
bio phosphate had been formed. In 1847, J.
J. Mapes made a series of experiments, thus:
ho found, analytically, that Peruvian Guano
contained the necessary elements for insu
ring the growth of plants, but not in the
right relative proportions to eaeh othor. He
instituted a series of experiments, practical-
*Jf by which ho proved that ono hundred
pounds Of burnt bones, treated with fifty-six
pounds of sulphuric acid, thirty-six pounds
of Peruvian Guano, twenty pounds of sul
phate of ammonia, formed a mixture every
way superior to Peruvian Guano, and that
it would not excite the soil, but would con
tinually add to its fertility.
He had found that onq barrel of blood,
fresh from tho animal, mixed with a cord of
organic matter, would, by fermentation, pro
duce a manure equal to a cord of well rottoJ
stable manure. He ftirther found that sev
enteen barrels of blood, when dried, would
make one barrel, and that blood could be
irocured at eomparitirrly little cost, in cer-
sin sections; that it could be dried by cook
ing and pressing so a* to produce a dry pow
der, and by adding to the abovo nnmed in-
bred ion ts an equal weight of dried bulloek's
glood, a manure is formed ant hundred pounds
of which are epual in power and lasting ef
fect to one hundred and eighty-five pounds
of the best Peruvian Guano.
Since ho has offered his invention to the
fanners of the country, some fifty companies
havo imitated this article under various
names, and for the purpose of rendering it
popular, havo traduced Prof. Mapes and hit
article, claiming tomako that or a superior
quality. Every year presents new imitators
of this article, who manufacture an inferior
article, using the mineral phoipates as a ba
sis. instead of the calcined bones of animals.
Notwithstanding all this, the demand far
Mapes’ Nitregeulsed Superphosphate of
Lime has doubled.
Peruvian Guano contains an excessive
amount of ammonia, the only nse of whieh
is to render water capable of dissolving a
larger amount of the inorganic eonstitneuts
of the soil, or os-sometimes called to act as
an excitant. The markot gardeners of New
Utrecht commenced some years ago by using
two hundred weight of guano to the acre;
they are now compelled to use twelve hun
dred weight of guano to produce tho tame
effect, and their land is evidently impover
ished by its nse, while thoee who have used
the Nitrogenised Superphosphate of Lime,
Lave steadily found uteir soils to bo improv
ed, epd instead of requiring more, they re
quire less fertilising material caoh yoar. And
this Is particularly true of Tobaeoo and Cot-
toh lands.
Among the advantages arising from the
nseoi Nitrogenised Snperphasphate are the
following: It carries no weed seed to the
eoll; it prevents rust, and Insures the perfect
ing of plants; thus, when used on Cotton, the
bolls do not fall and. as by the experience of
Mr. Lomas, Col. Davis, and Col. Goodwin
and others, it gives a greater weight per acre
of cotton.-. For Wheat, it has steadily pror
ed itself to be superior to tho Poruvian Gu
ano; when in contact with seed, it does not
destroy It as does the Peruvian Guano; and
it supplies the deficiency of the Phosphate
of Lime and other ingredients, produced b?
excessive reaping of grain and unduo pas
turage.
