L Mape* made a series of experiments, thus: he found, analytically, that Peruvian Guano H contained the neoeasary element* for insu ring'the growth of ptanU, but not in the right relative proportion* to each other. He netituted a series of experiments; practical- y.bjr which he proved that one hundred pounds or burnt bones, treated with fifty-six pounds of sulphuric acid, thirty-six pounds of Peruvian Guano, twenty pounds of suf- phate of ammonia, formed a mixture every way superior, to Peruvian Guano, and. that it would not excite the soil, hut would con tinually add to its fertility. He had found that one barrel of Mood, fresh IVom.the animal, mixed with a cord of organic matter, would, by fermentation, toro- duco a manure equal to a Cord o'f Well rotted stable, manure, lie further found that sev enteen barrels or blood, when dried, would make one barrel, and, that blood oould bo ~ roeqred at eomparitively little cost, in cor- in scotions; that it eoold bo dried by eook- ing and pressing so as to produce a dry pow der; and by adding to tho above named in- bredieuta an equal weight of dried buHock’a glood, a manure is formed one hundred pounds of which are epual in power and lasting of- feet to one hundred and eighty-five pounds qf the .best Peruvian Guano. Since ho haa offered his invention to the farmers of tho country, some fifty companies have imitated this article under various names, and for the purpose of rendering it .popular, havo traduced Prof. Mapes and bis article, claiming to make that of a superior quality. Erery year presents new imitators of this article, who manufacture an inferior article; using the mineral phospates as a ba sis. instead of the ealcinea bones of animals. Notwithstanding all this, the demand for Mopes* Nitregenised Superphosphate of Lime has doubled. Peruviun Guano contains an exoessiro amount of ammonia, the only use of which is to render wator capable of dissolving a lnrgor amount of the inorganic constituents of tho soil, or as seme times called to act as an excitant. The market gardeners of New Utrecht commenced some years ago by using (wo hundredweight of guano . to tho aore; they are now compelled to uae twelve hun dred weight of guano to produce the same effect, and their land is evidently impover ished by its use, while thorn who have used the Nitrogeniscd'Superphosphate of Lime, have steadily found their soils to bo iraprov- — j _»■ ' • e, they re year.
