PROFESSOR MAPES* Nltrogeslsei Superphosphate Of Patented November 28, IMS. FOR WHEAT, CORN, ROOT CROPS; COT- T>BIOR TO this Superphosphate JL had been mado in I5tmfand, hyi treating burnt bones with sulphuric aoid, and by the formation of eulph ate uf lime, thus abstract ing one atom of lime from the bones, a solu ble pbosphutn had been formed. In 1847, J. J. Mapes mndoa seriesof experiments, thus: he found, analytically, that Perurian Guano .contained tho necessary elements for insu ring the growth of plants, but not in the right relative proportions to each other. HO instituted aserios of experiments, practical ly, by which ho proved that one hundred, pounds of burnt bones, treated with fifty-six pounds or sulphuric acid, thirty-six pound* of Peruvian Guano, twenty potmd* of sul phate of ammonia, formed a mixture every way superior to Peruvian Guano, and that it would notexeitelhe soil, but would con tinually add .to its fertility. He had found that one barrel of blood, fresh ftom the animal, mixed with a cord of organic matter, would, by fermentation, pro- duco a manure equal to a cord of well rotted stablo manure, lie further found that sev enteen barrels of blood, when dried, would make one barrel, and that blood could be procured at comparitirelv little cost, in cer tain sections; that it could be dried by cook ing and pressing so as toprodueo a dry. ppw- dmyand by adding to the above named in- bredients an eqhal weight of dried bullock’s glood, a manure is formed one hundred pound* of which are epual in power and lasting ef fect to one hundred and eighty-five pounds of the best Perurian Guano. Sinpo he has offered hi*, invention to the former* of tho country; some fifty companies have imitated this article under various names, and for tho purpose of rendering it popular, have traduced Prof. Mapes and nit article, claiming to make that or a superior quality. Every year presents naw imitator* of thi* artiolo, who nuuuifoetur* an inferior Article, using the mineral phospate, as a ba sis. instead of the calcined bones of animals. Notwithstanding all this, the demand for Mapes’ Nitregenited Superphosphate of Lim* has doublod. Peruvian Guano contains an excessive ainpunt of ammonia, the only u*s of which is to render water capable of ’dissolving a larger amount of the inorganic constituents of tho soil, or as sometimes called to act as an excitant. The market gardeners of NeVr Utrecht commenced some years ago by using two hundred weight of guano to the acre; ADAMS, mckinney & co. 96 Liberty Street, NEW YORK, Offer for Sale from United States Bonded Warehouse: BRANDIES—Cognac—OTARD, DUPUY A Co., PINET.
