Cassell’s Illustrated Family Bible. Wo have received tho first number of this new book, containing thirty-two engravings. It will be toutd in num bers on the first and fifteenth of each month. It has attained an enormous circulation in England, and it* author, Mr. John Cassell, ha* made arrange ments to have it published in this ooun, try. All the religious press of New York speak of It iu. the highest torms of praise. A running commentary accompanies tho text, and is entirely free from sec tarianism. It is one of ihe most at tractive works we have ever seen, and Congressional. . Washington, March 7.—Sinat*.— Certain Indiuu Appropriations were passed to-day. Special orders werb postponed. House.—There was a general debate in Committee of tho Whole on the Congress visited Mount Vernou to-day, bv invitation of the Lodios’ Mount Vernon Asaoeiution, to witness their taking formal possession of the home and remains of George Washington. Terrible Conflagration at Bridge town. New York. March 7.—By an arrival from Barbadoes, wo learn that a terrible conflagration occurred in the city of Bridgetown, by which a largo portion of the city was destroyed. The loss is esti mated at $2,500,000. [Bridgetown is tiro capital town of the island of Barba dos and had a population in 1844, of 19,302. Steamboat Explosion—Dreadful Loss of Life. Eaton, Pa., March'7.—A new steam boat was in the act of starting this fore noon, on a trial trip when its boilers ex ploded, and produced a total wreck of the boat and machinery, and appalling loss of life, and the painful wounding of many persons. Eloven bodies have keen recovered, including that of Judge Sharp, of Bcl- videre, eight of the wounded hare been rescued. The number of persons killed and wounded have not been ascertain ed. Virginia on Co-Operntion. Uicumo.su, Vo., March 7.—The Vir ginia Senato have agreed to the majori ty report which is in opposition to the proposed Southern conference. The House has not yet acted on the propo sition. _ _ Lebanon, Pa., March 1.—At the office of the Courier, published in' this town, a steam engine of a peculiar description is now at work. It was invented by Mr. Peter Woitnar, formerly of Reading, and now of Lobanon, and Mr. Worth, editor of the Courier, says that it works oft’ his whole edition (about 35000) at a cost of some eighteen cents for fuel. A lad can attend it, and it can scarcely get out of order, with ordinary fair play and attention'. It drives a machine, on which the Courier is printed, without noise or perceptible vibration. It occu pies not much moro space than u large parlor stove. Congressional. • Washington, March 8.—In tho .Sen ate to-day Mr. Gilmer, of Iowa, gave notice of ids intention to introduce d bill to retrocede the.District of Colum bia to Maryland, and remove the Captol elsewhere. Mr. Brown’s Territorial resolutions were debated. In the Uottse, bills were reported from several committees. One bill was to provide for the establishment of a na tional printing office—another provid ing for military appropriations—and ono to establish it route for tho entire mail transportation between tho Atlantic and Pacific. All the bills were referred to the Committee of the Whole on the State of the Union. Others portions of the proceedings were unimportant. ShRRtFr or Monroe Countv Shot.—Wo understand that Mr. Bowden, Sheritf of Monroe county, was shot on Monday.— He attempted to serve a writ on a man named Ilihcsley, who advised him net to do its and shot him after lie did his duty. Homans.—The Eufaulu Spirit of tiie South, says: A man named Ilardee, was shot on Frillay night at Georgetown, Quitman county, Gft., and died in the courso of a few minutes. Mr. Hays Graddy has been arrested, charged with being the guilty party." MARKETS. Savannah, MarchS.—Sales of Cotton to-day 10; 10 bales, but uuchungod pri ces. , Charleston, March 8.—Sales of cot ton to-day 1,900 bales. . Sales of tho week 12,000 hales. The market closes weak. The receipts are 14,000 bales. Attempt to Arson.—A negro girl, a hired servant of Mr. L. ('. Denting, made an attempt to burn the house of Dr. Deering, with whom Mr. Doming boards, at Woodlawn on Monday night by setting fire to the bed. The fire was discovered by tho smell of the smoko while the family were at supper, and was extinguished, with much difficulty, by- Mr. Doming and'-tho : other iuinatos, The girl confessed that she set fire to the heel, though accidently; hut from her giving no alarm, and othirsus; i ious circumstances, there is little doubt it was done in tentionally.
