night he has been always stripped and
carefully examined prevent the . se
creting of any instrument, and all his
clothes but his shirt; pantaloons, and
stookings taken away. In .spite, of
the precautions, be has succeeded three
times within a few days; in escaping:
iflenvhis snii«li' ; n»t-:^-'>,,*4i simensinii
About two weeks since he took a set
of false teeth' out of his tnOUth,' and by
constant work contrived With them to
saw a; hole through tfae floor, of his
chamber malting a hole snffleient to ad
mit of his dropping through in to an
other part of the house, and thus es
caping. He was traced and caught in
the house of M.\ Pendleton, on Euclid
street. A few days since ho secreted a
piq, and with that exceedingly unlike
ly instrument, he managed to piok the
look of his door, and escaped into the
hall, where ho was fortunately arrested.
He then stated that a pin was of ,', more
value.than ton thousand dollars when
he wished to escape from, a room.
Last Saturday night he was carefully
examined,asusual,, t*fo«v hringplaced
in his room, but succeeded in seoreting
a small brass ring, split at one part, in
his hair. On being locked up for the
night he set to work and with the, ring
he cut through the sash and shutter, so
os .to enable him to remove them from,
the window. He then took the cover
lid off the bed and tore it into stripe,
with whioh he made-a rope reaching
nearly to the ground, adistanoe of some
twenty-five or thirty feet, ft Same of the
cotton batting with which the coverlid
was wadded, he placed in: bis stockings
to protect his feet, os he 1 had no shoes;
Then dressing himself in shirt, trowsers
and stockings, he slid down the rope
and escaped.
Striking across tbe country to the
Eight-mile Lock, he then took tho tow-
path of the canal, and walked down, to
University Heights, where he arrived
yesterday (Suno ay) afternoon. He was
very quiet when arrested, and spoke
freely of his escape, and made no re
sistance to being taken back to the
asylum. We question whether this
senes of extraordinary escapes can be
well matched.
What Ailxd Hm^-The last number
of the Knickerbocker has agood anec-
dote of a man who rarely failed to go- to
bed intoxicated and disturb Vis wife the
whole night. Upon hi* being charged
by a friend that he never went to bed
sober, he indignantly denied the charge
and gave the inoldents ef one particular
night in proof. , .T,
“Pretty soon after 1 got into bed, my
wife said, ‘Why. husband, what is the
matter with you? You act strangely.'*"
“ ’There’s nothing the matter • with
me,’" said I,, nothing at all.’ ”
“I’m sure there is;’* said she, “ you
don’t act natural at all. Shan’t I get up
and get something for you T’’
“And she got up, lighted a dandle and
canoe to the bedside to look at me,'shad
ing the light with her hand.
“I knew there was something strange
about you,” said she, “you are sober t”
“Now, this is a fact, and my wife will
swear to it, so don’t you slander me any
more, ly saying that I haven’t been to
bed sober in six months, ’cause I have.’
