The Steam Engine.—One of these new machines has been built* in Rich mond, Va., for the Russian Government and a trial was made of its capacity.— In four or five minutes from the time the fire .was kindled in it, thosteam rose and the machine was put in operation— the water was thrown upwards to the distanco of 250 feet, and then In a hori zontal direction. Connecticut Election.". - New Haven, Conn., "April 3.—The first returns .last night indicated the triumph of." the Democratic ticket, as there was a gain of 1,500 votes. The returns this forenoon, however, have changed this aspect qf aflairs, and. it is now .believed that Buckingham,', the Republican candidate for Governor, is elected by a majority of about'one thousand. The officers and-crew of the brig were treat ed with gross indignity, - From Washington, March -29—The House committee on Territories met this morning to consider the Arizona and . Jefferson Territorial bills. Mr. Mowry proved by conclusive evidence the population of Arizona to be about twelve'thousand, exclusive of Indians. Mr. Otero, the delegate from New Mex ico, concurred in. Mr. Mowry’s state ment, and testified that. the organiza tion of ArizonaJs regarded os a necessi ty for a territorial government, Mr. Williams, from Jefferson -Territo- rygavea statement, showing the ^neces sity for a territorial government there. He estimates the voting population at eight thousand, Later from Havana. New Orleans, March 31.—The steam ship Empire City has arrived from Ha vana with dates to the 26th Inst. The market'was qui et but generally unchanged. Good Cot tons were s :arce and firm. New York, April 2.—Sales of Cotton to-day COO bales, with a heavy market. Flour heavy, sales, 5,500 barrels; Sou thern brands unchanged. Wheat was firm, with sales of 18,500 bushels. Corn was heavy and sales 18,000 bushels. Augusta, April 3.—*Cotton—-The mar ket is quiet, prices unchanged.
