DWINELL, Pro’r, Chase of a Slaver—Terrible . Result, An Amorioan vessel, of ■ Baltimore build, was chased on the lath of 'Febru ary, off the coast of Africa, by a British vessel and a Portugese steamor. The master of the slaver, seeing no chance for escape, headed her for tho rooks. A letter sayst Just before sundown, the Portuguese gwo him the contents of several thirty- two pounders^ which brought his iore- topmost down, and as it was blowing al most a gale of wind, his jiblfooin follow ed directly after.. However, the fellow stopped for nothing, and, just as night set in, drove her high on the rocks off Cspe Lopez, the Portugese steamer by that time beiug in olose range, but the Gloucester was far behind. Those oh board the other steamer, however, de- suribe the scene as truly heart rending. As the brig sfluick, and was overwhelm ed by tbe breakers, the poor miserable creatures on board probably to lhe num ber of five hundred, set up a howl of despair that could bo heard even above the roaring of the hungry sea. But it was too dark, by that time, to see much and beyond human skill, or power'to aid the drowning wretches, so that they soon must have met their doom; * for' on the next morning the beaoh inside of the rooks was strewn with corpses and the fragments of the wreck. Nothing was found, however, to reveal tho natne of the slaver or any other., information concerning him, save that to the ..prac ticed seamen she proved of Baltimore build. The monsters who manned the vessel are supposed to have escaped in in their boats before she struck; and must have gained the shore, as a boat somewhat stove, was discovered on tlie beach, with the oars near. by. .A .good prize was thus lost, and, what is .worse probably five hundred human bodies launohed into oterhity.
