[Mr. OooDRicn was born in CJonneti-
cut, in 1800, and many years since dis
tinguished himself, in connection with
the late Mr. Kkttell, of the Boston
Courier, in the production of a series of
youths’ books,’known familiarly as Pe
ter Parley’s talcs and histories. Mr.
Goodrich established the earliest weekly
literary newspaper in the United States
and published the first “Annual." ■

CoNORESS AND UTAH TERRITORY.—It is
stated that the organization of the new
..Territories of Pikers Peak, Nevader and
Daootab, whicn has been agreed upon
by the committee on 'Territories in the
Senate* will result ijot only in forming
those Territories, but entirely wiping
out from the map the name of Utah*
and destroying the organization whioh
has given - the government so much
trouble. The.idea is to cut,'itup in
slides, attaching each' lo a different
Territory.' -
Episcopal Convention.
The thirty-eighth annual convention
of the Protestant Episcopal,. Church? of
the Diocese of Georgia, began its session
in Christ Church, tiavannalC'oh Thurs
day morning, the Right Rev; Bishop
Elliott presiding, and a large number of
clergymen 'and lay delegates being in
^-attendance.
The first day was spent in organising
and appointing the necelsary officers
and committees.
On Friday morning, after divine ser
vice, the Bishop delivered his annual
address, in whioh he spoke most en-
courageingly of the general progress of
the Church—of the doings of the last
triennial convention at Richmond, Va.,
ia October—of the increasing interest
manifested in the success of the Uni
versity of the South -and reported his
official .acts within the diocese during
the past year, showing a steady and
gradual imprdvoment in the Episcopal
Church in Georgia, and announced the
Church Intelligence, a new paper lately
established in Raleigh, N. C. as his of-
^ ficial organ of communication with his
diocese, and commended it to the pat-
roiiageof his clergy and laity.—Sav. Rep.
Death of Ex-Gov. Tazewell.—Ex-
Gov. L. W. Tazewell, of .Virginia died at
Norfolk, last Saturday.
The New Bridge.—Major Howard’s
force has considerable progress in the
building of the piers for the bridge on
which tne Mobile and Girard Rail Road
will cross the river. The work appears
to be done in a very substantial manner
the piers being of dressed granite to a
height above tne reach of freshets, and
brick jon top. From the river bank to
the rise in Thomas street the traok will
be laid on trestle work, high enough
for drays and wagons to pass under it v

ter, whose last alias was, we believe,
Williams. He is reputed to be one of
the greatest thieves m the country, and

and has been confounded with the pol
ished rosnal Haynes, who married a
>oung lady well known in this city,
and was sent to the Kentucky Peni
tentiary. Haynes is about 45 years of
