MATTER.
Homicide.—On Tuesday' evening
fames Hall struak Robert Patterson on
the head with a stick, from the effects
of which he died yesterday morning.—
The facts as we learn them are these.
Hall was drunk, and approaohed a
lumber of men employed to work on
theGa. & Ala. R. R. and began to inter-
vogate them. Patterson was an old
man, and being somewhat deaf did not
answer, whereupon Hall said he would
make him answer, and with one blow of
his stick felled him to the ground*
Hall managed to elude the officers, and
is now at large.

The Official Cats or Paris.—“In the
Budget of the Imperial Printing Office,
whioh is now before the Legislative
body," says the Pays, "is an item whioh
has excited considerable curiosity—it is
for cats. It appears that, in prder to
preserve the stoies of papers, printed
and unprinted, from theravages of mice
and rats, a considerable number Of cats
have to be kept in the establishment,
and the expenses of giving them food
twice a day, and of paying a man to
watch over them, is sufficiently great
to form a special item. These cats were
once nearly the cause of war between
the Director of the Imperial Printing
Office and the Direotor of the Archives,
whose gardens are adjacent. The lat
ter has in his garden a small art ifu hi
rirer, and kept in it a number of rare
aquatic birds. He perceived that the
number of his birds decreased almost
daily, but he could not tell how; at last
he discovered that they were killed by
cats, and beset snares, by whioh a num
ber of those animals were caught. The
keeper of the cats in the printing-office
perceived his feline stock diminishing,
and he suspected the workmen of the
establishment of killing them. But one
day a cat arrived with a fragment of a
snare round his neck, and led to the
discoveiy of the whole truth. The di
rector of the printing-office thereupon
domplained that his cats were killed,
while the director of the archives said
that he would not allow his birds to be
devoured; but at last an arrangement
was made to the effect, on the one hand,
that every issue of the printing-office
should be closed to prevent the inva
sion of cals into the gardens of the ar
chives, and, on the other, that in the
event of one by chance escaping it
should not be put to death.

A Delicate Operation.—One of the
most delicate manipulations in engi
neering is about to be performed in
connection wifti the lowering of the
west supply pipe of the Croton Aque
duct, which runs through Eighth ave
nue. This pipe is 30 inches in diameter.
It is to be lowed to a depth of ten feet
below its position, without the water
being stopped. In the upper part of
the avenne, the work has already com
menced. The earth is being excavated
from over and under the pipe, and
props are to be introduced until the
whole excavation of 11 miles shall
have" been completed. Then it will be
lowered to its bed gradually, bo as to
prevent the curve at any part of the
pipe from breaking. It appears that
the water cannot be shut off from the
pipe, owing to the fact that a large por
tion of the western district of the city
is dependent or it for supply. If the
pipe should break in the course of the
operation, the disaster would be terri
ble in its effects upon’ the adjacent
property,' while the supply would be
off most effectually.—-A. Y’ Tribune.
Precious WiY^—A few days since, a
little ragged urchin was sent by a trades
man to collect a small bill. He began
in the usual way, but. becoming more
importunate, at length the gentleman’s
patience becoming exhausted, he said
to him, “You need not dun me so
snarply ; I am not going to run away.”
“I don’t suppose you are,” said the boy,
scratching his head, “but my master is,
and he wants the money.”
Scene in the Interior or the Hun
garian.—Mr. Sheridan, diver, has re
turned to Halifax from Capo Sable. He
descended several times into the wreck
ed steamer. The Journal says:
“The sconce which presented itself
was appalling in the extreme; for al
though there were no corpses in the in
terior of the ship, there* were nearly
twenty bodies discovered entangled in
the wreck alongside and in the gullies
close by. These frightful remnants of
poor humanity exhibited all the stages
of dismemberment, sans heads, arms,
legs, Ac., and all more or less in a state
of decomposition. Those seen appear
to have been up and dressed, or partly
so.as some of them were evidently in
the act of putting on their shoes, stock
ings, or clothing, when the king
of terrors put a stop to their toilet for
ever.”

Apt Reply.—A good Elder brother in
Presbytery a short time since, thought
it wrong to talk about minister’s sala
ries’. “For," said he, “when our Sa
viour sent out his disciples, he told
them to take neither gold nor silver,
purse nor scrip; nor even two coats."
And he took his seat with all the con
clusiveness of manner which the use of
a sound scriptural argument is calcula
ted to beget.
“But why, Mr. Moderator,” said an
other brother in reply,-“did our Saviour
tell his disciples not to provide these
things? The very passage from which
the brother quotes, answers the ques
tion. The Saviour himself gives, as the
reason: “because the laborer is worthy
of his meat.” It was not the duty of
his disciples to provide these things,
but it was made the duty of those to
whom the disciples were sent.”
The quotation of our brother elder
was correct enough, as-far as it went.
But he stopped too short; he Bhould
have read further. And this, we fear,
is too often the trouble ; men are prone
to quote so much of scripture only as
will sustain a peculiar view, while if
they would quote and properly apply
the whole passage, their cherished
errors would be made manifest. Take
heed, brethren.—St. Louis Observer.
The London correspondent of the
Banffshire Journal says:
“The copy of Mr. Carlyle’s two new
volumes of Frederick, is. now in the
hands of his publishers, Messrs. Chap
man and Hall, but it will be a consider
able time yet before the work in a per
fected form reaches the public. Carlyle
corrects, reeorrects, alters, and punctu
ates, so scrupulously, that printers and
publishers grumble, and the public
grow impatient.
