acter. and will be far 'I6ss apt to
astray among the briars and oraml
of vice and .error. The effect of culti
vating beauty around her home will he
to cause every sentiment that sweetens
her own existence to spring up into
newness of life—to bud and to blossom
in all its loveliness. She, too, will come
to prefer a display of rioh colors in her
garden walks to such a display on her
>erson, and learh to appreoiate that
mbit whioh covers the form in a profu
sion of huge and brilliant printed flow
ers on muslin, and whioh seems to-in-
dicate an absence .of the flowers of sen
timent, and an absolute want 6f that
taste whioh shows itself in the cultiva
tion of the garden.
We would have every woman both a
lover and a sedulous cultivator of flow
ers.- We are confident that many of
those Women who grow and expand like 1
weeds in the heated apartments of I
;aiety and fashion, and become dried!
,n heart and stale in sentiment, might I
be rescued by a timely attention to flow-1
ers. They would regain their lost I
freshness, the bloom would revisit their I
wan and wasting cheeks, and fresh life
would circulate its healthful currents !
through their, chilled veins. The effect
would be to reclothe the saddened and |
attenuated viotim of fashion with beau
ty, and to cause flowers of sentiment I
again to spring up in hearts whioh |
had been entirely over-run with weeds.
Take a thin, sallow, and diseased I
person from the room in whioh he has I
respired the unwholesome and close I
atmosphere whioh there prevails, and I
E lace him on the mountain side, and I
ow long will it be before thejblood in I
his system, that has half the time been I
congealed, and only flowed fast under 1
the impulse of fever, will go merrily on
its “winding way" through the arteries
and veins, and he will again become
strong and vigorous. So also one who j
has wasted her beauty and her fresh
ness, the tone of her heart and the re-1
finementsof her sentiments, in those
saloons in which the atmosphere is full |
of moral disease, and where fashion
and folly dance hand in hand, in pos- I
itive mockery of all those qualities of I
which men and women have a right to I
boast, and which ally them to the I
angelio existences, will, when trans-l
planted like A blighted flower to a gar-1
den, soon begin to regain a portion ofl
the original loveliness of her nature,!
and may by and by become entirely!
redeemed from the taint that has stolen!
“fire from her eye, and vigor from her|
limbs.”—Louisville Journal.

Scene in Mb. Covode’s Committee
Room.—A violent and extraordinary
scene occurred in Mr. Covode’s Com
mittee room to-day. Mr. Schnable had
been recalled to close his testimony,
and Judge Block was present by his
own request, expecting to conduot the
cross-examination, but the -Committee
decided that he must only submit ques
tions in writing through Mr; Wmslow,
one of its members.
Mr Schnable proceeded to give the
history of his political relation to the
Administration, and why he went to
the Constitution office to demand a
cessation of attaoks on Mr. Douglas,
where he had the accidental interview
Judge Black, which led to the publica
tion of Mr. Buchanan’s letter to Mr.
Walker.
During the progress of the testimony
Judge Black frequently interrupted
him and put questions, and finally ask
ed where his residence was, which Mr.
Schnable regarded as an insulting im
putation. Mr. Schnable thereupon rose
from his seat and denounced him in the
most offensive terms, applying those of
“liar,” “soroundrel,” and such epithets
with the utmost freedom.
Judge Black left the room, and was
followed by Mr. Schnable, who continu
ed to stigmatize him along the corridors,
and in the presence of the astonished
spectators. Both parties threaten crimi
nal prosecution. Mr. Schnable will
continue to-morrow.—N. T. Tribune.

Biondin on Another String.—It I
seems that Biondin intends changing [
the location of his rope for the perform-1
knees of the coming season. The Ni*l

assisted by his agent, is now here super- f
intending the arrangements necessary I
for the stretching of his rope across the I
river, and erecting the necessary enolo- f
sureson the American and Canadian I
shores. The Cables is to be hung across l
jnst below the Suspension Bridge, di- ]
reotly over the the most terrible rushing I
rapids of Niagara. The feats whioh M. I
Biondin contemplates performing du-1
ring the present season, promises to out-1
vie anything that he has yet done ini
his most hazardous and dangerous of all I
callings. Among other things, theru>|
mor prevails that the daring rope-walk-1
er seriously contemplates diving from I
the centre of his cable in?a life-heat, I
made for the speoial purpose, into the I
roaring flood-tide and foam-wreathing I
rapids of the river below.
