Charles Lamb.
The New York Tribune says t
Any new glimpse of Charles Lamb is I
always pleasant. A true-hearted admi
rer of his, Dr. J. W. .Alexander, thus
describes a pilgrimage to the India J
House in .August, 1861, in his “Forty ]
Yearp’ Correspondence,” just published ]
by C. Scribner.: “I inquired of the door-|
keeper about Charles Lamb. Ho, said 11
have beeiV here since I was'10 years old, I
bUt,I never hoard of any Mr. Lamb.”!
The doorkeeper of tho museum remem-1
berpd him well. ‘Oh, yes, sir; he was al
' little man, with such small leg
wore knee breeches.’ Ho direc’C
me to a private stair which would take I
me down to the accountant’s office. 11
went into a place below like a bank, and |
was shown to a principal person, Mr. I
W. It was the room inwhiohLambI
wrote for many years. Mr. W. showed I
me his window where his desk was. 11
looked out at the high blank wall not I
five feet beyond, and understood!
Lamb’s ‘India House.’ Mr. W. showed!
me a quarto volume of ‘interest tables,’[
with remarks like these in Lamb’s fine|
round, hand on the fly leaf: ‘A book -
much interest—Ed. Review.’ ‘A work
in which the interest never flags.-
Quar. . Review.’ ‘We may say of thid
volume that the interest increases from|
beginning to end—Monthly Review.’-
Mr. W. knew Lamb well. 'He was
short man, Bmalier than you, and|
always wore shorts and block gaiters.’ ”
Poor Elia I what would he hove said if 1
he had known that the memory of bis |
“continuations” alone survived to dis
tinguish him from his fellows7 But in
the process of ages the very India
House itself is now about to to be sold, I
and will probably be replaced by a
railroad station. In the general clear-1
ance of the Company, it is said £5,000 j
has been realized by the sale, at so I
much per tun, to the paper mills of thel
duplicate archives alone, so circumlocu-l
tory were all the processes of business!
in thiB princely corporation. In this!
inass. doubtlessly, was included what!
Lainb emphatically called his “true|
works."

A Hard Lemon.—One of a party was
speaking of a four-legged chicken he
had seen, when Leinon immediately
averred that that chicken was not near
so peculiar ns a duck he had seen ki
his youth, of whom a certain Captain
Morgan was the fortunate possessor, for
it not only had two pair of legs, but that
one pail- growed from his bock. It
would be impossible for us to repeat his
own words, but his story was that the
duck, chasing grasshoppers, after get
ting tired with running on one pair of
legs, would turn over and continue his
feeding.
This story rather nonplussed one of
the party, who suggested that it was
impossible for the duck to feed with his
bill pointing upwards.
“Oh,” says Lemon, “his neck turned
on a swivel!”
“But how about his wings, Lemon 7”
“Well, to tell you the truth, them
shifted!”
In speaking of mosquitoes of a large
s'z j; seen by one of a piirty in a Southern
luke, Lemon, (who was a sea-faring
man many years) remarked:
“Well, there! Surinam is the darnd-.
est place for mosquitoes I ever Beed.—
Last time I wetat for a load of met-lasses
my cousin drivmeaboutto a plantation,
and ’mong other thing on the farm L
seed one of the prettiest yoke of cattle
1 ever laid my eyes on. Neow, (I'm
tellin’ the truth ; you needn’t laugh)
when I came back where them cattle,
was fust, one ox was raisshi’ or there was
nothin’ of him left but skin and bones,
any way; and, if you’ll believe me, 1
squinted up to a tree, and there was
the oussedest big skeeter I ever seed, a
pickin’ his teeth with one of tho horns.”
Excursion Train Changing Engines
when at Height or Speed.—The light
ning train which carried the New York
Delegates from Detroit to Chicago, on
Monday, says the Advertiser, made but
five stoppages between the points.—
These were at Ann Arbor, Jackson,
Kalamazoo, Niles and • Calumet. At,
Marshall, the wonderful feat of chang
ing engines while the train was at full
speed was admirably performed. Be-'
fore reaching that station, the locomo
tive Challenge was . unoccupied, and
shooting away from the swift pursuing
train, reached the station and switched
off. The Raoer the awaiting engine,
started, the headless train meantime
thundering on over the righted switch
in pursuit of the new locomotive, and
without slackening of speed the. two
were.united without jar or confusion.—
The same feat was successfully perform
ed at Miohigan City, where tho Racer
was exchanged for the Rambler. Thu
train from Qaleeburg to Kalamazoo,
nine miles, in ten miuutes, and several
times a mile per minute wasaecomplish-
ed. It reached Chicago ten minutes
before time, vis ; eight hours and thirty |
minutes from Detroit.
