What the Homestead Bill Provides
for.
The Homestead bill which passed the
Senate on the 10th by a vote of 44 to 8,
provides that any person who is the head
of a family may, after tho act becomes
a law, enter oue quarter section, (IjO
Acres) of vacant and unappropriated
lands, or any less quantity, to bo loca
ted in a body iu conformity with the
legal subdivision of lands, upon mak
ing ulhdavit before tho Register that
the applicant is the head of a family,
And is actually settled on tho land, and
that the application is made for his or
her benefit, and that of no one else.—
"The final certificate, or patent, shall not
bo issued for five years al ter the date ot
entry, and not before it is certified by
•two credible witnesses that the settler
lias erected a dwelling house and resi
ded upon the land for five years; wiiere-
.up.in the patent shall bo issued up- n
payment of twenty-five cents an acre.
Tiio land thus acquired shall not be
liable for'debt until after tbe patent is
issued. In cases of false swearing upon
making the entry, or abandoning the
land for more than six mdtitlis at one
time, the laud shall revert to tho gov-
■enimant. The rights conferred by tins
Act are extended to inchoate citizens
who have declared their intentions, ns
required by the naturalization laws, be
fore the issuing of tho parent. Noth
ing in this act shall be construed so as
to impair the existing pre-emption, do
nation or graduating laws, or to em
brace lands reserved to be sold or en
tered at the price of two dollars nnd
fifty cents an acre. The President is
required to order all surveyed public
lands into market, by proclamation,
within two years from tho date of this
act, except such as are reserved by the
government.

of Saturday has an editorial over five
colums m length in which it attempts
to prove to tho people that they have
for years past held apolitical "faith, M
which they say they have never held.—

Great Tornado at - Cincinnati--a,ubs
of Life.
Cincinnati, May 22.—The most do
structive tornado ever known in this
region passed over this city yesterday
afternoon. It came from the north
west in-the Bhape of an intensely black
cloud about two miles broad, rushing
forward with feurful rapidity, accom
panied with thuuder nnd lightning and
torrents of rain. Houses were demol
ished or unroofed in many parts of tho
city, and property, to the vuluo of half a
million was destroyed.
A great many persons were injured,
and six wero killed. Among the build
ings injured was the new Commercial
Office, which had the roof blown off"
and carried the distance of a square.—
Part of one of the walls fellthrough the
flooring and injured many persons. The
steeple of St. Joseph's Roman Catholic
church was blown down. Most all the
public buildings, school houses and
churches in the city, besides many pri-'
vate dwellings, had their roofs blown off',
or where otherwise damaged. The
telegraph lines were prostrated in every
direction, cutting oil* until to-day all
communication with distant points.

Cincinnati, May 22.—The Dayton
railroad is covered with a forest of fall> n
timber. The country along the Miami
railroad, between here and Loveland,
has suffered terribly. The railroad de
pot and other buildings at Loveland
are demolished; also, the railroad shop
at Laurenceburg. "
The Roman Catholic church at Brigh
ton was unroofed ; also, the Roman
Catholic Orphan Asylum at Cummins-
ville.
The road between Cttmmtnsville and
Brighton is covered with trees torn up
by the roots. The storm raged with
fearful violence along tho river, but tho
steamers at the ievee being moored, re
ceived no damage. The sclioor Vir
ginia Home, two miles above tho city,
was capsized and stove to pieces. The
passengers were all saved, but two hands
were lost.

ington railroad wa3 blown from tho
track.
Congressional.
Washington, May 3T).—Senate.—The
Oregon war debt bill was passed. The
Postal Deficiency bill comes up to-mor
row.
House.—A bill was introduced for the
relief of invalid pensioners; the bill
involves one million and a half dollars
of Arrearage.
Capture of Another Slaver,
Charleston, May 31.—A letter ad
dressed to the Churlestou Courier, da
ted Key West, 20th, says : The United
States steamer Crusader, Lieut. MatFet,
captured a slaver containing four hun
dred Africans, off Nearitas, pn the 23d.
The sluvei had been brought to Key
West,
Constitutional Union Heeling.
New Orleans, May 31st.—There was
a mass meeting of the Bell mid Everett
party to-day, at Odd Fellows Ilall. The
meeting was largely attended. It was
resolved to admit no otiier platlorm
than the Constitution.

Washington, May 31.—A telegraph
dispatch from Jackson, Mississippi sign
ed by A. N. Kimble, says:—Tue Demo
cratic Convention that met here yester
day was the largest that was ever held
in the State. The delegates were unan
imous in favor of sustaining the course
of the Delegates at Charleston, and al
so that Dnlega'es be fully accredited to
tlic Richmond and Baltimore Couvon
tion.
Steamer City of Norfolk,
New York, May 30. —'The steamer
City of Norfolk was seized by the Unit-'
eil States Marshall to-day. The Nor
folk was suspected of fitting out for the
slave trade.
Charleston, May 31.—Sales of Cotton
to-day 300 bales. Tho market was gen
erally unchanged.
