The orgun of but recently, in a long arti- pains to explain that ho did contribute to that institution loderate sums, and that the frauds of very recent date. That he ik no money with him is proved by purse which his friends have made, that money was not his object is lliown by tho $12,000 which he left in lis safe. A recent meeting at the hooper Institute passed resolutions lommending the zeal with which the Tammany delegation clung to one can didate at Charleston, and of that dele gation Mr. Fooler was the heart and soul. Though forced to appear attach ed to the Administration, he was, in fact, the most zealous friend of the aspiring candidate. Just as the South seceded, a movement was made to unite on some other candidate. To counteract that movement a large sum had to bo used, and none but Mi. Fow ler had the means of raising it at once. Wo can only explain the conduct of Mr. Fowler, a man of judgment, a man of the world, but a man of generosity, and the lenient manner in which his crime is regarded by men of undoubted honor, by the supposition that Mr. Fowler, whose generosity is proverbial, gave what was dearer to him than life itself to aid a sinking cause. And he took the money from the Treasury as Napoleon at the coup d'etat took $5,000,- 100 from the Bank of France, hoping to return it by a subscription, nnd that a delay in tho subscription brought it to the Knowledge of tho Executive.—N.Y. News, (Dcm.) The Great Eastern.—Tho Great Eas- ern is announced to sail on the 9th of June for New York, and there is no doubt whatever that she will sail punc tually on the day fixed. Tho number of passengers to be taken out is limited to 300 first class. A large number of berths have already been'taken; and tile limited number fixed by the board will, it is expected be taken in tho curse of a few days, The time which the vessel will remain at New York will depend upon the amount of attraction for visitors, from which the company hope to derive a large revenue. In ad dition to this, negotiations are at this moment going on with one of the de partments of the Government in respect to the chartering of the ship for tho conveyance nnd laying of tho subma rine cable between Rangoon nnd Singa pore—a link which, if supplied, will placo Calcutta within six days from London.—.London Observer, Return op the Jews to Palestine.— There are few current subjects of more absorbing interest ordeeper significance than tho events now almost daily trans piring which point to the repossession by the Jews of their own land. The tide of progress, after a laps eof centu ries, may bo said to have fairly turned in that direction, nnd the prayer long. oiFered by that chosen but now scatter ed people, that “Judah may be saved and Israel dwell securely, nnd that the Redeemer may come to Zion,” is un doubtedly hastening to fulfilment. The Sultan of Turkey is encouraging Jewish emigration to Palestine, ana is offering to sell them as much land os they choose to buy, and it is said has even expiessed his willingness to dispose of the Mosque ofOmar tot hem, which, it will be recollected, stands upon the very site of tho Jewish Temple on Mount Moriah. This mosque is one of the Mnhommedans’ most celebrated shrines, being scarcely inferior in national im portance to those of Mecca and Me dina BQyTho best fencer in Paris is beautiful young lady of Polish origin, Mile. Linowska held the sword with so much grace and precision that no gentleman present was able to touch her. Tup. Lvnn Strike.—The strikers’ or ganization in Lynn have voted to do vote the remaing funds in the treasury to the defense of parties indicted for riotous -disturbances in that city on the occasion of the recent strike. New Orleans, June 1.—The Daily Delta, of this evening, publishes a letter from Gov. Houston, announcing him self a peoplo’s candidate for President. He says that the Constitution and the Union embrace the only principles which will govern his administration, should he be elected. Death of Lady Byron.—Tho New York Post says: We learn by the “Glasgow” that on tho 17th inst., Lady Byron, the widow of the great poet, died at London in the GOth year of her age. She was born in 179-1, and was the only daughter and heir of Sir Ralph Milbanke Noel, Baronet. violent hail storm at Lexing ton, Mo., on Monday last did much dam age to the fruit in that vicinity, and broke nearly all the glass in this city.— Some of the hail-stones weighed about seven ounces, and split the shingles on the roofs of tho houses in their de scent.
