A Panama Beauty.
Says a correspondent writing from
Panama:
“Some of the women are remarkably
handsome and graceful. About nine
o’clock in the morning, when the rays
of the sun were getting to be powerful,
['dropped into a house, which was visi
ble through the verdure, to get a cup of
oold water. The heads of the family
had no doubt gone into the forests to
pick fruits, for no one was at home but
a young Indian maiden, who started up
like a startled fawn at my appearance,
and might have tied, if I had not been
stationed in the doorway. Forming my
hand into the shape of a drinking-cup,
and elevating it to my mouth, I made
known my wants. She was immediate'
ly re-assured, and led the way to a shady
grotto, in the rear of the dwelling,
where a crystal mountain-spring burst
forth from the gifted rock, while I fol
lowed, in speechless admiration of the
vision of loveliness which floated be
fore me. She was attired in a loose
dress of the purest white, adown which
her luxuriant hair, platted in broad, flat
plaits, hung to nn almost incredible
length. Her complexion was a soft-
tinted olive—a good, rich color, but yet
so delicate withal that the slightest
emotion was sufficient to send tho crim
son to her cheeks. Each rounded arm
was enclosed by a curiously shaped and
costly bracelet, and in her ears were
strangely-fashioned pendants, some
what in the fonu of a crescent. Her
forehead was exquisitely chiseled, and
her features almost Greeeian in their
contour. But, how shall I ever describe
tho^e glorious, dreamy eyes, their fath
omless depths of liquid blue, or those
long, drooping lushes, which ever and
anon came softly down, like silken cur
tains.
In a picture gallery on Fourth street,
Cincinnati, is a tolerably fair represen
tation of a Southern Indian woman, in
the painting of "Cortez Burning his
Fleet." Tire maidens in Powell’s paint
ing of “De Soto Discovering the Missis
sippi,” are still better, but both fall far
short of portraying the union of every
quality of grace and beauty which stood
in stainless purity before me. Could an
artist put upon canvass the picture
there presented, the shady dell, tropi
cal fruits and flowers, the limpid spring
and mossy rooks, the rosy skies and pur
ple mountain peaks, that sweet snd
face and faultless form, he might then
lay down his pencil nnd live upon his
fame forever. As she stopped upon the
slippery rock, with a ouaintly fashioned
gourd, to dip up tho clear water, there
was disclosed a foot whose polished out
lines had never been sullied by the shoe
of civilization, and which her native in-
nocjnce had never dbeon taught to hide,
I could have lingered long in that ro
mantic glen, but time would only per
mit mo to thank my fair benefactress
by all the signs and gestures at my com
mand, which were received with such
extraordinary modesty that I stood
abashed at my rudeness. If your cor
respondent had yielded to the same in
stinctive impulse which leads tho wor-
shippor of art to bow before the divine
productions of Phidias or Angelo, and
had thrown himself at those fair feet in
anuctof adoration, he would undoub
tedly have made a tool of himself, and
therefore wisely refrained.
A Suockixg Tragedy.—The Memphis
Appeal of Thursday has the following:
We learned Inst evening from a gen
tleman who came a passenger by ti e
train over the Memphis and Little
Book Railroad, that a terrsble and fa
tal affray occured near Madison, Ar
kansas, yostevdny morning. It seems
that an altercation occurred between a
gentleman who was immigrating, with
his family, in a wagon, and an individu
al who was passing them on the road.
After the man had got some distance
from the moverB, he raised his gun and
fired at the gentleman in tho wagon,
the shot missing the object aimed at,
but striking and killing the gentleman’s
wife. The mover contemplated the
sad result for a moment, when ho seiz
ed his own rifle and shot the despoiler
of the happiness of his family. We did
not learn the names of either party to
the deadly affray.
Jjgy-Tho Washington correspondent
of tho Charleston Courier, under date of
of the 11th inst., says:
Some of tho members of the Baltimore
Convention have arrived. Tho Douglas
men are coming in from all quarters,
and appear to be inflamed with enthu
siasm and zeal in his behalf. Any one
who had indulged the hope that- the
Baltimore Convention would harmo
nize either upon a platform of princi
ples or of a nomination should abandon
it now. Nothing is more certain than
tho fact that the Douglas men come
prepared and resolved to repudiate ev
en tho Tennessee resolutions, which the
recent Southern State Conventions hove
also repudiated. Still less will tfoo
Douglas men be disposed to assent to
the Charleston Majority Platform.—
A rupture of the Convention at Balti
more may bo regarded, therefore, os
inevitable.
Hicks, the Pirate.
Hicks, the murderer of the ' Watts
boys and Captain Burr, on a sloop oil'
Sandy Hook, lias made a confession.—
From his disclosures as to this tragedy
and the hints he drops of participation
other bloody atrocities on sea and
land, there can.be no doubt that he is a
felsn of the first magnitude. We have
been accustomed late years to regard
such sea monsters like Hicks as existing
chiefly in the realms of romantic fiction
but a perusal of “his own report against
himself," and what is being nourly de
veloped about him and others of his
kind, must startle the public from this
delusion.)
This man seems to have been engaged
in deeds of blood all his life. Some
days ago the. publication of certain dog-
gvcl verses dictated by Hicks led to the
belief that be was an actor in a sangui
nary piracy on the “Saladina," and this
belief was confirmed by the facts. A
gentleman of New York who yvas in
1844 attached to the United States naval
service, and who was in that year in
commission on board a ship on the Pa
cific station, visited Hicks with a view
to identify him as the Johnson engaged
in the Saladina affair. This gentleman
at once recognized the prisoner as the
man who had been for some years a
“beach-comber” or cruiser on the Span
ish Main, who had been several time a
tried tor offences at Callao-, and the
identical Johnson who engoged in the
brutal murder of Captain McKensie
nnd his mate on the Saladina. In this,
I-Iicks was under the leadership of a
brother sea-robber named Fielding' who
subsequently took command of the ves
sel, but Hicks and the piratical crew be
coming tired of him, also, they held a
counsel about putting him to ueath and
in his own presence too, nnd then in
cold blood threw him overboard.—
There will bo no sympathy expressed at
the announcement that such a repro
bate is to be executed on the 13th of Ju
ly.—P/iila. Enq.

New „ Medical Salt,
For Inflamotory Diseases Only 1
New Medical Salt
IS NOT A CURE ALL.
FOR INFLAMATORY DISEASES ONLY.
D R. COGGSWELL’S New Medical Salt,
instead of being a remedy for all ills,
hus control over but one ill, has hut one aim,
and accomplishes but one tiling, to wit: Sub
dues Intlainntory Diseases—whatever be its
form or locality, whether in tho head, throat,
abdomen, extremities or skill.
The peculiar excellence of the Now Medi
cal Salt is, that without tho useless loss of
blood nud strength, it effectually cures In-
flamatory Diseases (no others) by producing
an equilibrium of all the fluids in tho body,
the waut of which is tho solo Cause of in
flammation.
Invalids, Tako Notice! — The following
forms which tho unbalanced fluids assume
and many not hero mentioned, that have
moro or less fever and p .in, are easily sub
dued by the New Medical Salt as fire is ex
tinguished by water, to wit: Brain Fever,
Headache, Rush of Blood to the Head and
Heart, Fits, Inflamod Eyes, Ears and Nose,
Canker, Neuralgia, Spinal Affections, Ery
sipelas, Bronchitis, Pleurisy, Asthma, In
flamed Lungs and Liver, Heartburn, Coughs,
Dyspepsia, vcnerial Disoases, Rheumatism,
Gout Scrofula, Salt Rheum, and all Itching
and other cutaneous eruptions.
Dr. Coggswell’s New Medical Salt exerts
like the vaccine spatter, an extraordinary in
fluence over tho reins and ar|pries, resulting
in a gradual declining of inflammation as in
dicated by the pulso, which soon returns to
its natural state, as the heat, pain and fever
disappear.
Dr, Coggswell’s Now Medical Salt does just
what it claims to do no more no loss—equal
izes tho fluids by removing from tho system
all arterial and venous obstructions. Descrip
