The Baltimore Convention.
Washington, June 14 1860.—Large
numbers of Delegates to the Baltimore
Convention have arrived, and are con
ferring with their friends in Congress
as to the policy to be pursued there.
The proximity between this Capital and
the Convention, together with the di
rect personal influence which can be
|exercised by the President and Cabinet,
are prejudicial to Mr. Dquglaa’ inter
est. Every effort will be made to com
pass his defeat, no matter what else
may follow.
Mr. Douglas will suffer most at Bal
timore from the want of some able and
■influential leader in the South, whohas
position and character enough to give
him weight with Delegates from that
section. Mr. Stephens, of Oeorgia, was
expected to perform this part at Char
leston, but could not attend, being then
engaged in an important criminal case
in Alabama. He will now be kept sway
by illness, thus depriving Douglas of
his important aid at the most critical
juncture.
j The impression gains ground that
the Convention cannot agree upon any
basis of oompromiBe. Both interests are
more hostile than when they separated
before, and each charge the other with
| the responsibility of that rupture.
The South Carolina Delegates are not
I commissioned to Baltimore, but a mo
tion will be made for their admission on
the same footing as other seceders,
which will necessarily be resisted.
Two candidates are now regarded as
almost inevitable. Mr. Davis will be
urged by the Southern interest, but as
his name may possibly prejudice the
movement, a combination between
Messrs. Hunter and Dickinson is now
proposed os the most effective mode of
striking Mr. Douglas down at the South.

The delay in the departure of the
Great Eastern has beon confirmed.
The iastest Sioilian despatches indi
cate that the statement or capitulation
was only partially correct.
Advices from Naples to the 3d, states
that the King refused the condition of
the capitulation and that hostilities
were to commence soon.
A Neapolitan General has gone over
to the Revolutionists.
Later telegrams, dated Palermo, the
of the 3d, announce that the bombard
ment had not been renewed, and that
the armistice still continued. Garibal
di was still master of the city but the
Neapolitans occupied the forts. The
capitulations were not carried out, and
the negotiations continued.
Letters from the French Squadron
say that the armistice was to last until
the 5tb, and that Garibaldi was forced
to grant the armistice for want ofj am-
unition.
‘Douglas must be Nominated.”—Such
the edict of the Washington States, the
metropolitan mouth-piece of _ Senator
Douglas and his Northern Squa'tter Sov
ereignty Freesoil supporters. In an ar
ticle in that paper, a few days ago, we
find the following imperial proclama
tion : “The nomination of Judge Douglas is
an absolute necessity; opposition to him is
TREASON TO THE PARTY AND TO THE
Union.”

Baltimore, June 17.—The outside
I pressure in favor of Douglas is very
I strong. The general impression is that
| the admission of the Douglas Delegates
will oppose the admission of the seced
ing Delegates to the Baltimore Conven
tion, and will favor the admission of the
now Delegates who may present them-
| selves. The whole matter will he re
ferred to the Committee o‘n Credentials,
who will report thereon on Tuesday
morning. If they report against the
admission of the seceders, or if their re
port is not adopted, through the action
of the friends of Dougins, then the sece-
dors will go buck to Richmond. Sever
al Northern Delegates, who are opposed
to the nomination of Douglas, will also
withdraw. If things go on harmonious
ly, however, it is believed that a new
candidate will bo put in nomination
and successfully carried through. The
friends of Dougins claim 150 votes for
him on tho first ballot. Both factions
are more bitter and excitable than they
were nt Charleston. Tho city is throng
ed with the Delgates and visitors to the
sights of the week.
The National Democratic Conven
tion.
Baltimore, Md., Juno 18.—The Con
vention reassembled at llo’oclock this
morning. General Cushing, on taking
the chair, made a brief address.
The New York delegation introduced
a resolution to the effect tiiat the claims
to scats by the delegates from the Cot
ton States he referred to the Committee
on Credentials, und that the report be
final, with the understanding that no
one shall be admitted to a scat in the
Conventihn who will not pledge him
self to abide by its decision, and sup
port its nominee—which resolutions
was lost.
A motion was then made (hat the
President shall admit to the floor oil
delegates whose seats are not contest
ed, pending which a recess was taken
until five o’clock this afternoon.
