Scott. both isorip- imust bow an inti* . . ’•"6 s Kachinery of kind to the list sketches Ig that often- lose study, and . ze his method r also his individu- ehesible; he is r philosOpher in the ^tnind, revealing its se* Pan almost mysterious pro- Ud of humanity, so to speak, r Illy so overlaid with the world’s r to be perceptible only at inter- searched after; and again, the is so concealed in the magnfi; ice of its setting—the pomp and pp* . >ntry of ideas and languge, that one Ilmost loses sight of the worthless moss, ir passes it over as an unnotioeable [thing. Scott, on the contrary draws 'his characters, generally, with a bold and fearless hand—there is scarcely a possibility of mistaking them; virtue and vice are apparent at a glance. His readers are not led astray by a sort of ignis fatuus phantom, the substance of which none can realize; his characters stand forth with an individuality, and a stamp of truth, that is easily recog nizable amid all richness of coloring given to his pictures. Slack Rope Performance by a Rat. Rats are somewhat proverbial for their natural instinot, whioh often manifests itself in expedients resorted to by them for self-preservation. We were witness of an instance of this a day or two since. Dick, our family cat, had osught a rat, and in its struggles for liberty and dear life the latter animal escaped up a post oh which was stretched a clothes line.— i this the fugitive walked, a In and De Lave, (ill he had reach Out ui Blon upon din ai ed what he doubtless considered a safe distance frpm his pursuer, where he pau sed to await the issue, watching, with distended orbs, his enemy the cat. The latter, meanwhile, had lost no time in pursuing his prey, and having reached the top of the post, attempted to imitate his ratship in his slaok-rope performan ces. But finding tliiqimpossible, he de scended to the ground, and after paus ing for a moment, watching his prey,he apparently became bewildered at the strange turn matters had taken, and re turned to watch the hole from whence the rat had emerged. This was the rat’s opportunity, and seizing upon it he de scended to the ground and made good his escape.—Newport (It. I.) Mr. Bennipg, one of the se ceding Georgia delegates, has made the amende honorable to Colonel Gaulden, the Douglas delegate from that State, who made tlieslave trade speech in that Con vention. It was supposed that their troubles, caused by a heated debate would have ended in a duel. . Monstrosity.—We learn from the I Charleston Mercury that Dr. Bachman, of that city lias received the carcass of a pig from Brttnchrille in that State, which had two bodies, eight legs, and I but a single head. Pointed, if not True.—Since the cs- I tnblishment of a new daily quarto paper I in New York, called The World, the Chicago Press thus classifies the lead ing journals of that city: The World, the Flesh (Tribune and Times,) and | the Devil (Herald.)
