North American steamship Persia Capt,
C. H. E. Judkins, with Liverpool dates
to the 22nd of June arrived here to-day.
General News.
The'Bullion in the Bank of England

The Neapolitans were fortifying Mes
sina Garibaldi was preparing to invest

It was statel on the 22nd, that the

On Thursday we were Visited by a
welcome rain, which seemed to extend
for a considerable distance in aVmoaVev-
ery direction.. The dust was settled, the
atmosphere cooled, and the suffering
crops revived and saved from being
burned up. Every one was fully pre
pared to appreciate the blessing when it
came, and be thankful for it.
Hot Weather.—We have hod an un
precedented spell of hot weather during
theipost week. In some places the crops
oremow suffering for want of rain. On
the 1st inst., in Rome, rain fell to the
amount of 35-100 inch, and on the 5th
45-100'inch.
The following table, prepared by Mr
R. S. Norton, snows the standing of the
thermometer in the shade, for the last
six days in«thisplace:

Civil war is raging iu Neuva Leon and

A movement is on foot in Northern

Philadelphia July 3.—A grand Dou
ghs and Johnson ratification meeting
was held here last night, at which seve
ral speeches were made and much en
thusiasm manifested. At the conclu
sion of the meeting. Judge Douglas was
called for by a large concourse of per
sons who had assembled in front of the
Girard House, from which he respond
ed to the call of the people. Among
other tilings, he said that he did n<u
intend to make any political speeches
during the pending canvass; and that
it now remained for the people to * de
cide on the great issues now before the
country. He said that Pennsylvania
believes that Congress can be better
employed in developing the great ma
terial resources of the country, than in
wasting time forcing slavery or anti-
slavery” sentiments upon the people of
the Union,
Bell and Everett Meeting.
New Orleans, July 1.—There was an
enthusiastic Bell and Everett meeting
here last night. The meeting appoint
ed delegates to Baton Rouge. It was
resolved, that in cuse of tho absence
of any delegates, the rest be empowered
to name substitutes.
