Death of Hon. J. H. humpkin. Our community was startled from its Visual quiet, on last Tuesday morning by the unexpected announcement of the death of Hdn. JohjiH. Lumpkin, ffow were prepared by his short and fa. Val illness for this sad casualty. While most of our citizens were sleeping in peace and imaginary security riot dream' ing that death wits near ht hand, his spirit was struggling with the destroyer on the confines of another world. He was stricken down with apoplexy about .. nine o’clock on Monday night, while conversing with some of his friends pi the piazza of the Choice House, and af ter lingering through the night, with convulsion after convulsion racking his frame, he was released from hit suffer ings about 5} o’clock in the moriliil’g. After being attacked ho did not speak at all, except at first to mutter indis tinctly a few wordB, nor did he appear to recognize his family or friends. His death is a sad bereavement to Our com munity. On Tuesday an air of solemnity rest ! ed upon our town ; conversation was al most entirely hushed. Or Conducted in V a low tone of voice, and an expression of sadness was upon the countenances of all the people. Everything indicat ed that some unusual calamity had be fallen us; and such was the cose. There was ho riian whose death would have been more sincerely and universally la- mented.*"*By his kindness of hearts his 'courteous deportment, and his devotion to the interests of the public, he had on. dearod himself to all, and won the en tire confidence of the people. A short biographical sketch may not be inappropriate in this connec tion. •Judge Lumpkin was tho son of tferi late Rev. George Lumpkin, and was born in Oglethorpe county, in this State, in the year 1812. He graduated at the University of Georgia, in 1832, and in February, 1834, wAs admitted to the Tar at Clarke Superior Court. In tho sumo .year he moved to this county for thC purpose of practising his profession! and settled at Livingston, about nine miles below Rome on the Coosa river, which was then the'County seat. The same yeat, Vre believe, it was changed to this place, when he 'ivithotbrCrs, mov- * ed with it and ’beca’mC one of the foun ders of Rome. His law office was one of tho first buildings erected in this ‘city. He rose rapidly in his profession and ^ In .popular favor, and in 1830 represent ted Floyd county in the Legislature.— -In 1842, he was elected member of CJon- . gross on the general ticket, and again from the Fifth Disti'ldt Mi 1844 arid 1846. In 1849 he was elected by the Legisla ture, Judge of the Cherokee Circuit, and his term expired in 1854. He was again elected to Congress in 1855. In 1857 ho was one of the three promi nent candidates for the nomination in the Democratic Gubernatorial Conven tion, which, finally nominated Joseph E. Brown. Last year he was elected Presiderit of the Ga. A Ala. R. R. Com pany, which office he filled, and ih whose business he was engaged at the time he was taken ill. ► He was appointed by his party to represent the State at large in theOhar- ‘lestbn Democratic Convention, and was one of the majority who seceded from that body. He was re-appointed to the Baltimore Convention but did pot at- t0 Noman was ever more popu^^ta his section of the State, than was Judge Lumpkin in the Fifth D.strict, and not withstanding bis long public life, the high positions Be has occupied and his consistent devotion the interests of his party, no man ever had fewer personal enemies. He was only forty-eight years old—in the full vigor of marihobd,'Arid apparently in the eqjoryffidrtt ef perfect health.
