FOR IN I'ERESTING READING MATTER; figyOn to-morrow night in St. Peter’s Church Rev. Dr. Quintard, will deliver a lecture on the “Peculiarities of the Episcopal Church." II®* Rev. A. C. Dayton, author of “Theodosia Earnest,” and “The Infidel’s Daughter,” will preach at the Baptist Church, in this place, on Wednesday night, the 18th inst. 86^ Steamer Alfnrata arrived from Greensport, on Friday morning, at 6 o’clock, with 20 passengers, 11 bales cotton, and lumber. Rome, July 14, 1860. 8©“The July term of Floyd Supe rior Court was resumed on yester. day. City Improvements.—Oar city contin ues to improve. Two of the remaining lots, left vacant by the fire in January 1839, are having fine brick stores erect ed upon them. Messrs Reese & Bay ard are building one, and Messrs. Smith AOinberg the other. Dr. R. C Word is putting up a neat brick office next door below J. II. McClung, and Col. Shorter is building a brick store on lot above Va. E. Berry & Co. Mr. O. B. Eve’s Car riage factory is up, and the machinery being moved into it.. It will soon be in operation. Worth Noticing.—Buyers of dry goods are reminded by R. S. Norton & Son that at the first of this year they marked down their prices and required payments to be made on the 1st of July for all goods sold before that date. But from this time to the 1st of Jan. this firm retain their low prices and give as long credit as those who did not reduce for short credit. It is not necessary for us (o state that the Nortons keep the very Aril of goods and always offer them at fair terms. See Advertisement. The IIoosac (Mass.) Tunnel.—'The distance to be cut through the mountain for the IIoosac Tunnel Is four miles and a half, and the material to be cut hrough is hard mica* slate, intermingled with quartz. The height of the tunnel is to be eighteen feet, its width four teen. V * '1 he Work gets on slowly; the rate of advance is only two nnd a half feet a day. On the 3lst May the workmen had reached just 1683 feet into the mountain, from tho east end. The dis tance made on the west side is about 800 feet. Three miles and a half of solid rock yet lie between, the workmen on the east side and those on the west side! As the work- is now done- by blasting (not boring,Jit will require at least ten or twenty years to finish the tunnel, unless some new and more per fect machine for boring is brought to bear on the work. There are now eigh ty wookmen engaged," night and day, working in gangs, eight hours each at a time. The distance between the highest point of tlie mountatn and the tunnel below, when finished, is not less than two thousand feet. The Biq Race.—From Wilkes’ Spirit of the Times, of Thursday, last we copy the following: Planet, Cont/aree and Daniel Boone.-*- These three celebrated race horses have been entered in a sweepstakes of S5 000 each, to be run on the Fashion Course, Long Island, in the fall of theyear. The proprietor of the track, Mr. Henry Col ton, adds $5,000 to the stakes, so that the race will be for $20,000. Four milo heats is the test to which these famous racers will have to put their powers.— The value of the stakes, and the repu tation of the horses engaged, combine to make tiiis One of the greatest races of modern times. Here we have three of the greatest performers of tho ago, perhaps, and they stand as the repre sentatives of three of the greatest stal lions that the world has seen. In this race Planet, the best of Revenue’s got, Daniel Boone, by Lexington, dam bv Glencoe, and Congaree, by Glencoe, dam by Monarch, will come together. “When Greek meet Greek, then is the tug of war 1” ' Univesitv of Virginia.—At the late commencement of this institution, (Ju ly 4th,) the following young gentlemen lrotn Georgia were among the gradu ates: R.
