He was, during two- thirds of his life, connected with .that establishment; but for several years past he has been infirm of body but of sound mind, and continued his daily visits to his office until about a week post. Stum pi no * Candidates.—The Rich mond Whig says: Strange and melancholy the specta cle indeed now presented to the Amer ican people. For, it Ik a noticeable fact that all the candidates for the Presiden cy and Vioe Presidency, except _ Bell nnd Evorett, who are quietly, dignified- lv and honestly attending to their busi ngs at home, are at this moment trav elling over the country, and harangu ing the people in their own behalf!— Breokinrldgo is making speeches on his way to Kentucky—Douglas speechified himself on to New York, where he still is—Johnson isora'-ihg to the people of , Georgia—and old Lane is sputtering tobacco juice and detestable grammar Mfcnm the faces of the sovereigns of North Carolina. . Nobody Bound.—Ex-President Pierce has written a letter to B. F. Hallet in Which he alludes to the two Democratic Conventions, and says: “There has been, in foot, no nomination made in conformity with the established and recognised usages of that organisation, and hence sound and faithful men will find nothing in the proceedings so far as the nominees are concerned, to bind their party fealty.” Mr. Pierce further oavs that a union upon Breckinridge :anr<l Lane “cannot even be hoped for.’ If Democracy be thus run aground, - let the patriotic men of the party quit ithe wreck and take at once the “best next step”—vote for Bell and Everett. —Savannah Rep.
