Cafe Race, July 27.—The rteamship City of Washington passed Cape Race at day light this morning, and was board ed by the-yatoh of the Associated press. From some unknown cause no com mercial news was received. There had been a fearful massacre of Christians at Damascus, by which five hundred had been billed and among them the Dutch Consul. The Ameri can Consul was wounded. At Naples there had been a conflict between the troops and people, and several were killed. The Ministry had been dismissed and a new cabinet form ed. The former inspector of Polioe had been stabbed. A Proclamation had been issued by Garibaldi against the Bourbons, and in favor of Emanuel. Acquittal of Judge Terry. St. Joseph, Mo„ July 25.—The Cali- forniaPony Express, with San Francisco dates to the 17th, has arrived. We learn from the San Francisco papers that Hon. D. S. Terry, indicted for the murder of Broderiok, has been acquit ted, owing to the absence of some of the witnesses against him. Rain at Last.—Our county was vis ited on Friday and Saturday last with fine rains. We believe they were not partial, but extended far in every direc tion. It was thought that most of the corn was too much injured by the drought to be benefitted, but wo ‘hope this will prove to be a mistake. There is prospect of more rain. Crops and Politics in Putman.—A gentleman of this county, writing from Putman, says the 'drought has been very destructive to crops in that section, and upland corn is ruined. He found more Douglas men in that county than in any other part of the State he had visited. The Bell men were staunch and hopeful. $©-Judge Douglas' it is stated in tends to visit several.Southern States af ter his return from the North. BgyThero are now five papers in Georgia supporting Douglas and John son, vix., Augusta Constitutionalist, Atlan ta Confederacy, American Newt, Cassville Standard, and Rome Southerner. What’s in the Wind. It will be observed that a correspon dent at Key West expresses some ap prehension in regard to a rumored piratical expedition, designed to wrest from the Government its Africans now en route for Liberia. Rumors of the same sort have been current in New York. Certain it is, that deliberate calculations have been made, within the last few weeks, among some of the enterprising young' negro traders who have their stronghold in this city, in regard to the possibility of capturing the vessels chartered. by the Govern ment for the conveyance of the Afri cans to their native country. And when we consider, in the same connec tion, the foot that four steamers lately sailed from this port for the South, un der peculiar circumstances, there is much that is calculated to excite sus picion. There wero two strange steam ers, which arrived at\this port from the South, changed owners, and sailed again about two weeks ago, clearing for Galveston, and suggesting much inquiry as to their probable destination. Then there is the steamer City of Norfolk, which experienced much difficulty in obtaining a clearance, on uccount of the suspicions of the United States Marshal, but finally sailed for St. Thomas, The steamship Granada _ is also known to have sailed on a “special mission,” by direction of the Govern ment. These movements may all be perfectly legitimate, and have no con nection whatever, yet they are of diffi cult explanation. If anybody has really undertaken to catch negros after the plan hero indi cated, they arc likely to find this kind of business is much like catching Tar- tare.—N. Y. Journal of Commerce. ' t®*We return thanks to the Com- *mittca for an invitation to attend a “Complimentary Military Party, given to the officers and cadets of the Georgia Military Institute, at the City Hall, Atlanta, Tuesday, July 31 1860.” It would afford us much pleasure; but “duty first.” jQyStoamer Alfamata, Capt.JonNP. Gould, from Greensport arrived at 6 A. M. Friday, with 38 Passengers, 4 bales cotton and — Lumber. July 30,1860. V i $ Southern Baptist 8. 8. Union* The Boasd of the Southern Baptist Sunday School Union held its semi-an nual session in this place on Friday and .Saturday last. Delegates from Georgia, Alabama and Tennessee were in atten dance. On Friday morning the intro* ductory sermon was preached in the Baptist Churoh, by Rev. J. M. Pendle ton. On Saturday the meeting of the Board, and the Mass Convention were held in the City Hall, Rev. Mr. Snead ■of Tenn., presiding, and Rev. A. S. Worrell, of Ala., Secretary. Rev. A. C. Dayton related the history of the en terprise and explained its object to be .the encouragement and establishment of Southern Baptist Sabbath School Literature. At night Rev. J. R. Graves, of Tenn,, made a strong appeal in behalf of the movement, at the conclusion of which about $4,500 was subscribed, which amount was afterwards increased to something more than $6,000, consisting of Life directorships, Life memberships, and subscriptions of $100 eaob, payable in ten annual installments. The friends of the Union were muoh pleased With the favor it met with in this place, 1' Incendiary Movements. Richmond, Va., July 28.—The citl- *ons of Prince William county, in this Reported Troubles at Occoquan, Va. —A private letter received in Alexan dria, on Wednesday, from Occoquan, Prince William co., Va., says that much excitement exists in that place, owing to (he rumors that a bocjy of 300 armed men from the upper part of the coun ty had made arrangements to march to Occoquan, on .Friday, and pulldown the Lincoln and Hamlin” flag-pole recent ly erected there. It was, the lottersaid also reported that a telegraphio dispatch had been sent to Gov. Letcher, stating the cause of alarm, and that Gov. Letch er had responded to the dispatch by saying that Gen. Eppa Ilunton had re ceived orders to preserve the peace of the country. A dispatch to the Charleston Courier; from Washington City, says:—John C. Underwood leads the Republicans at Occoquan.
