More Fires in Texat.
New' Orleans, Aug. 3.—New*; fr<W
‘Galveston, Texas, to the 31st July has
been received. A large flouring and a
lumber mill were burnt at Austin on
the night of the 26th of July. The loss
was about $100,000, and there is no
doubt the fire was the aet of an incen
diary.
A negro was recently eaught in the
act of setting fire to a building in
Georgetown, and he confessed that he
had been incited to the act by two Abo
litionists who had induced him to burn
up the town. '
North Carolina Election.
Washington, Aug. 3.—Reliable* re
turns from North Carolina come in slow
ly. Wake county has gone for the op
position. New Hanover is very close,
but it is thought the democratic ticket
has succeeded. In Wayne county Ellis
loses 174 votes. In Lenoin county El
lis has a reduced majority. In Craven
Ellis holds his own. In Northampton,
Halifax and Edgecomb, large democrat
ic majorities are reported for the 8ut*e
ticket.
The Legislature.—Tho Constitutional
ist publishes a list of fifty-four counties
in which thereareseventy-five members
of the Legislature reported for Breck*

Douglas.

The Meteor,.
The meteor which was seen at this
place on last Thursday, was, according
te our exchanges, also seen at Louisville,
Ry., Nashville, TVsnn., Atlanta, Colum
bus, Augusta and Savianah, Ga. Wo
presume, of course, that it was visible at
nil intermediate points, and, perhaps,
for some distance beyond those plaees.
^*Th e Montgomery and Charleston papers
of Saturday make no mention of its ap
pearance in those localities. Like the
meteor Been in the Northern States, on
the 27th of July, in different sections,
itseemod to move in different directions,
The Columbus Enquirer says its course
was from East to Northwest; the Augur,
ta Dispatch says from a point a little
South of West to the Northwest; the
Savannah News says from East to West
To us it appeared to start in the South,
east and traveled towards the North

. Laughable*
A laughable incident happened hi
one of our leading theatres, the other
night, which seriously compromises til-
reputation of one of the cleverest
members of the Metropolitan corps dra
matique.
In one of the spectacles now bein;
played it was necessary to hove an ele
phant, and as a genuine live one was
not to be had, it wus necessary to impro
vise one, and Mr. , who we will cai
Tom, was selected to do the fore-legs o
the beast, and move his eyes and ears.
Tom is over-fond of his glass, and in
this instance a happy thought struck
him, but as the sequol will show, it
it proved disastrous to poor Tom.
Towards tho close of tho performance
the audience began to observe t-hnt th
elephant was very unsteady in front
but no particular attention was given to
the fact until poor Tom, unable Ion rer
to keep his balance, gave out entirely,
and pitched headlong into the orches
tra-stall, carrying his sober posterior
with Mm. This not being on the bill,
created much merriment for a time,
and it was generally considered an acci
dent, but upon taking the unfortunate
elephant behind the scenes for repairs,
two bottles were found bearing the sug
gestive label: “Bininoers’ Old London
Dock Gin—especially designed /or Family
Use.” Tom had turned the bottoms of
the bottles out to represent the oy?s of
the elephant—keeping his mouth en
rapport with the necks, and at the same
time giving a peculiar and appropriate
motion to the eye of the elephant.—
The facts in the cose soon leaked out,
and whenever any of Tom's friends are
dry they have only to say “Bininger” to
provoke a smile.—N. Y. Corret. Baltimore
Patriot.
Found her Baby before she knew
it iiad been Lost.—Quite an interest
ing incident occurrod at tho Tennessee
depot, Lynchburg, on Monday after
noon, under the following circumstan
ces: Just before the time of the depart
ure, a darkey came running down the
platform with a baby—yes, a live baby,
in his arms calling out, ‘Who’s lost n
baby? who’s lost a baby?’’ No one;
claiming the darling of its mother, the
sooty Afric” poked his head into the
ladies’ car, exclaiming, in quite a melo
dious voice, “whose loss dis chile?’’
when a lady rose and exclaimed "God
bless me—I forgot the darling little
creature.”
The baby was placed in its mother’s
arms, when the darkey retired, highly
delighted in his having restored tho lit
tle one to its careless mamma.
